If you are with Virgin media and going to use the internet to any great extent during the peak hours (daylight hours 10am-9pm, I know it sucks) and don't want to be throttled after the threshold level (details here http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html/internet/traffic.html) has been met there is a way to avoid it.

If you phone them up after being throttled they will unthrottle you and say next time try and determine your downloads. However just phone them every time they throttle you and they just continue to unthrottle you. I know it isn't the ideal system especially on a what is meant to be an *unlimited* package but it might help some people that just want to finish downloading something fairly quickly and not wait for the throttle to end before finishing.
Until you can get the unthrottled 50mb package which is not available in East Belfast yet :(

They throttle me from 12pm - about 12am, can download between 9-12 and get about 800kbps speed, after that its ridiculous, was thinking of changing to Be, even asked Virgin for my code, problem was i didnt change in the end and they cut me off 4 weeks after i requested it, took me 2 days to get back online!!!

I also love how this is peak hours.........between 10am - 3pm and 4pm -9pm. Unless I work during the day I am bound to get throttled (family of 4 goes through internet very quickly....esp with streaming radio and videos)

is it the cheapest isp or a freebie with your tv or somat this?

No I have the 20mb broadband but as soon as you download 3gb+ they reduce your potential connection to 25% effectiveness for 5 hours.

well it is between sky and virgin (stuck with virgin until 50mbp comes out and no caps or throttle or pay the cost of leaving and setting up with sky)
roko5000 you must not be going over the threshold during the peak hours then.

It means using online storage can be a pain because it goes from 18mbps to 2mbps in no time.

how much is it to goto sky? they usually have some good new customer deals and cashback....mum and brother have just switched and are getting a better deal with tv phone and internet and paying less a month than virgin, virgin pretty much offerd somat as good but was too litle too late

Virgim TM drives me nuts so if I need anything I just do it overnight, I guess in the long run it helps as really heavy users do throttle the exchange and effect everybody and that would annoy me even more.
