I have been trying to get a V+ box from Virgin Media for as cheaply as possible, at present it is £99. Sky are now offering a HD Sky+ box for £49. I called Virgin Media and told them I was cancelling my account. Once they asked why I told them because Sky are offering a HD Sky+ box for £49 and Virgin Media agreed to give me the V+ box for £49. Its worth a try, it worked for me.

Your not actually buying the box off virgin as it always belongs to them, the £49 will be for the installation. When you pay £49 for the sky box its yours.

Have you got something in the terms and conditions for this, I was on NTL years ago and they had it in the contract that the equipment was always there's. Thats why they were able to keep the monthly cost cheap. I would have thought if they are expecting you to buy a box now, they are allowing you to keep it when the 12 months end. Just a thought.

We will provide you with a set-top box and remote control, which will be reclaimed if you cease to be a digital television customer for any reason. Additional monthly rental charges apply to any further set-top boxes you may wish to hire. Premium channels or package upgrades, once ordered, must be kept for a minimum of 30 days. Please read my original post. Not once did I actually mention buying the V+ box. I have managed to have a V+ box fitted for less money, that's all. If Virgin own the box, that's even better cos I am not responsible for repairing the box when it goes wrong. It's not like I can use it with any other system.

I have saved some money for something I have recieved, therefore I was sharing the information. No need to discuss the syntax of my post.

Hi,

I pay about £50 for landline, XL package, which is most TV channels (including Setanta), apart from Sky Movies/Sport, 2M Broadband uncapped and 300 texts and 300 minutes on my mobile. So not to bad.

is the £49 the only thing you will be charged. then just the £5 a month for the TV channels etc if you already have a virgin phoneline

On their website it says £99 then further down says £30 or £15 for quick install

http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html/specialoffers/vplus.html

V + Offer: Available to all new Virgin TV customers (subject to status and credit checks). Offer also available to existing Virgin TV customers who keep their existing set-top box (at a cost of £5 a month) in addition to their V+ connection. Existing Virgin TV customers should call 0845 840 7777 to get this offer. (Calls cost 6p per min from a Virgin phone.) Installation fee is £99 (usually £150). V+ subscription is included with TV Size: XL. There is a £5 a month charge for TV Size: M and TV Size: L. £99 installation offer ends 31st March 2009.

General: Installation charges apply (starting from £30 for standard install and, subject to availability, from £15 for Quickstart self-install). Payment may be required in advance. All prices include VAT. Prices quoted are for payment by Direct Debit and e-billing. If you pay by non-Direct Debit methods you will incur a monthly £5 charge, payable to Virgin Media Payments, for payment handling services. Customers not taking the e-bill discount will have £1 per month added for paper bills. Calls may be monitored. These terms and conditions are in addition to and form part of our standard customer service contract.

I already have Virgin with an XL package so the extra £5 is already included, so I have managed to get the V+ Box fitted for £49.

I have had several accounts with Virgin Media (I'm a student so always seem to move house at the end of the tenancy), and they have never once asked for the Virgin box back. I currently have three of them, one from last year, one from whoever lived in my current house and never took it away and my present one.
Last year, when I cancelled the contract, I asked what I should do with the box, and the woman on the other end of the line just said to keep it.

I don't suppose there is much point in VM collecting boxes that are a year+ old, especially if they have new boxes coming out regularly.
#16
canny get offer with 50 quid credit and 23 quid a month as its for new customers only ***kers

I got the V+ box totally free last year when cancelling/renewing my contract.
It will be taken back if I cancel - so isn't mine to keep. But the bonus to this is that it will be repaired or replaced free of charge when faulty unlike Sky HD which will only be repaired/replaced whilst under warranty.
One of the benefits is that V+ boxes have one extra tuner, therefore, you can record 2 chanels and watch a third at the same time.

More HD chanels are expected in the near(ish) future with VM but Sky wins hands down here, although most HD channels are upscaled to HD and only few are filmed in HD.
Other comparisons are that of the on demand feature - few people seem to realise that Sky offer Sky Anytime to all Sky+ and Sky+ HD customers which allows you to catch up or watch popular programmes and soaps from the past 7 days. And online, many more shows and even films (for movie subscribers) are available to view free for Sky customers.
Sky are also in the process of creating a much bigger on demand system which they're already in the process of archiving millions of hours of TV for.

Hope this helps anyone making the choice.
