Hi everyone,

just brought my first house and I want to get digital TV, be it Virgin or Sky.

I really want to get Virgin phone line and broadband though due to better speeds.

I also want all the channels, bar Sky sports.

I'm not too bothered about paying extra for HD.

Has anyone got any preferences on what they would go for?!
Has anyone got a mix and match deal between the two and would you rate it?

Thanks

I have had the worst customer service ever from sky and would love to move to virgin but apparently our house doesnt have the right cable or something.

go for a virgin package and make sure you go via quidco as I think they are offering £120 cashback!

VM - always great speeds although phone calls are expensive

Would you have everything with Virgin then?...I'd go for it straight away but I have grown up using Sky interface and love it, just dont want to be dissapointed with Virgin

moving from virgin as CS is shoddy (but doubt sky is better) and virgins calls are expensive

I would say Virgin. You get all the same channels and also all the on demand stuff which includes hundreds of seris of old shows all for free.
The layout isnt drasticly different from sky systems either so you wont have the problem of learning how a new system works. (hell my gf switched to virgin recently and even she didnt have problems).

One thing which is a big plus for Virgin is the way you rent the box over buying it like you do with sky. From my understanding (and sorry if this is wrong) if your sky box breaks down you need to buy a whole new one but with virgin you technicly rent the box as well so when ever there has been a problem they jsut appear (usurally same day) and switch the box over free of charge.

Also ever since Virgin took them over the customer service has gone on leaps and bounds over the old NTL days.

I have been with cable TV for a long time now but every time im in a house with sky I think it looks ok but dont understand why people pay the same price for a slightly lower service. Take nothing away from sky but the on demand stuff is great on its own.

Vote Cable :-D

defo else you dont get quidco and all in one is far cheaper and always get full speed connection.

V+ box can record two channels at once too. Sky cant.

Internet speeds are awful,

They have had loads of issues billing us more than they should that i've spent hours fighting with them on the phone,

Both times we've signed up with them the people signing us up have made false claims (1st saying the internet speed we'd actuallt get would be much higher and second told us we could have a deal we weren't entitled to so had to fight to get that)

In 3 years of having sky have had around 10 boxes as they keep breaking, engineers that come out are unhelpful.

Always loosing signal

Customer service say anything to get you off the phone and do nothing they've told you they will

Sorry i just hate them!!

Sky can (i hate the fact im sticking up for them here). Sky can record two but you have to watch one of them or a recording. V+ (i think) can record 2 and watch another at the same time

well I spent hours last night looking at different deals...I may be wrong but it looks like I can get 50mb broadband, all the sky channels (bar Sky sports) and phone for 80GBP with Virgin. (plus get free HD channels)

If I went for just 50mb broadband and phone with Virgin = 39GBP plus then an extra 39GBP p/m for the equivalent Sky package, works out at 78GBP, but no free HD channels.

Also worth noting that first 2 months are 19.50 if get all from Virgin

Virgin is way better - weather does not affect it, you dont have to have an ugly dish installed

So much free content to watch music vids, catch up and loads of other tv stuff you can watch whenever you want for free...Sky sucks at this

seriously, why would you want 50mb anyway. I pay vm £17.50 for phone line & 10mb broadband and can download a film in half an hour or a tv episode in 5 minutes and still browse without any perception of it being slower

blu-ray quality streaming is only about 7mbps anyway I think.

But next to no HD content.

If HD is important to you then you should go with Sky.
If you want top notch broadband you should go with Virgin.

If you want good customer service forget them both and stick with freeview.

I have just recently had virgin package installed in my new place and there customer service seems pretty good so far.

I was wondering how you watch all these old series as i only seem to be able to watch catch up stuff from the last 7 days

Same channels? What about HD?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_HD_channels_in_the_UK

A quick tot-up reveals about 38 HD channels for sky and 7 for Virgin.

csiman

V+ box can record two channels at once too. Sky cant.

It can actually, you just can't watch a 3rd channel at same time as you can with Virgin.

Does Virgin provide an online tv service like SkyPlayer?

virgin media I think are crafty with the current website layout. Remember you have to pay £11 for line rental.

I'm moving to virgin media.. they got me with the additional £11 line rental! (small print!)

I went for the :
Size XL broadband - Up to 20Mb fibre optic broadband
TV - Size L - Over 100 digital TV channels
phone - Size XL - Unlimited anytime UK landline calls

website said : £7.95 for 2 months then £37.95 a month*

the * points to *When you take a Virgin phone line for £11 a month
one would think the line rental would be incorporated when selecting a telephone bundle..

Getting £65 from quidco .. someone earlier said £120 which i am guessing is with that other company topcashback?
