Virgin and the BPI will be targetting people sharing files illegally from next week according to the register (link in next post).

Contrary to recent rumours people won't be getting cut off, but will be getting letters from Virgin and the BPI

So if you are on Virgin & use torrents to illegally share files, expect a letter soon!

Well if Virgin did start to cut off downloaders I doubt they would have many users left. As for me, i'm with Onetel, I pay for my connection but.....

And rightly so, people are under the impression that it's performers that make lots of money but do not forget that whilst it is true the big musicians earn big money this inevitibly funds the development of smaller artists (many of whom have second jobs). Why would you take the artist's work (music) for free? Would you employ a plumber and ask them to work for free? Would you go to the Tate Gallery and just take a painting home? WOuld you yourself work for free, by illegally downloading that's what you are asking artists to do. Music is already devalued, illegal downloads make them worthless.

Music these days isn't even worth downloading let alone paying for.

Sorry, should have said 'so called' music....

I heard that virgin werent cutting you off they were reducing your speeds up to 90% for 5 hours for downloading.

what about file from rapidshare.com ??? how can they proove its illegal? if they intercept ILLEGAL if they open ILLEGAL if the read the file name ILLEGAL. so therefore if they stop you from downloading from rapidshare they are breaking the law as well.... i will curt there speeds by 90% LOL

Im with virgin and cant say i have had lots of problem with them but they are starting to do my head in with capping speeds not just for downloading basically because they can.

In the virgin advert it say there are unlimited downloads duh no one said anything about illegal downloading LOL :whistling:

I dont have anything to worry about with the downloading thing but i think they are starting to push there customers to far.
#8
another thing lol why is it the joe public that are getting the blame for this? if there wasnt illegal download sites then it wouldnt be happening! BMI should be chasing sites!

It doesn't work like that mate. Basically they upload a fake torrent themselves (normally labelled axxo etc) and record all requests. It's known as entrapment;-)

so if my daughter uses limewire i will get a letter? cos i am so fed up with virgin anyway! three weeks ago while decorating and tv etc was moved son took card from digital box and we couldnt find it. Its the first time in 6 years we asked for anything from them except this new box we got about 3 months ago has the card exposed(!)
anyway they wanted to charge me £50 to replace the card! until i told them to take the service away-they then told me i couldnt as i had a contract-i told them i had never signed or agreed a contract-so after 30minutes they said i could have the card free...just after we found it!!

Your right Shengis, half of the music downloaded is not worth buying.
Plus I think some of these downloaders are doin 'artists' such as Amy Winehouse a HUGE FAVOUR, if she doesn't get paid much money for her music - she can't go stuffing huge amounts of drugs into her face can she? Illegal downloading could actually save her life!
If I couldn't download, I would just copy someone's CD onto my PC or tape it.
Yes I still have a tape player somewhere!

Well my take is, if its worth keeping its worth BUYING. There's so many films I would never have even looked at if I hadn't seen them thanks to the net. I consider it more a 'try before you buy' type thing.

Im screwed lol.

All providers will be sending out their letters & doing their bit to try & stop illegal uploading/downloading not just Virgin !! so it wont do any good changing your provider for this reason ............. there are plenty of legal downloads too on these 'sites' ... so how will they know the difference anyway ? I think we are going to see a lot of changes with this over the next couple of years.

Some of the stuff I downloaded is unavailable to download legally. These file sharing sites have practically every song imagineable, whereas the likes of itunes dont. A friend of mine wanted the Last of the summer wine tune for her phone ... not very east to find on the legal download sites. I think it's good for stuff like that. I have about 2 suitcases of (legal) CDs in my house, most of which are in a bad way after moving house with me about 8 times in the space of 10 years! I just don't want to pay to buy the CDs again when I only want to listen to a couple of songs on them!
To me downloading a couple of songs for personal use is no big deal, it's the same as when I used to tape the top 40 on the radio in my teens!
If I was downloading huge amounts of CDs to make a profit, then thats another story...
#21
the only way I can see them monitoring this legally is to watch the commonly used ports for torrent downloading. uTorrent has a 'randomise port' option so it uses a different one every time and can encrypt data transfers so even if they did decide to go illegal and look at what you're downloading, they're not actually going to be able to see what it is. If people stick to the default ports and Virgin stay legal they have no way of knowing if what you're downloading is a pirate copy of windows, a movie or a public domain, free, OS like UNIX. Its scare tactics, there is no way they can legally find out what you're downloading and if they start capping MY downloads I will be asking for evidence that I've done anything illegal.
#22
What if you use torrents to transfer files legally? Will they be intercepting the data to see what the files are before sending out the letters?

That is bang on  You can try running Peer Guardian to block the companies from connecting to you :)

Or Get Newsgroups ;-)

Thing is, I love buying music, ok, if I have listened to a track or possibly downloaded it, if I like it, I buy it, simple as. But the problem is, go into your local HMV now, u cant buy singles any more, and if u can, there is a small stand about a meter square with them all over the place.

I am 100% happy to use Itunes and pay £1 for a track, but it needs to be of MP3 format, and you have to be able to put it on any mp3 player or CD. I know this can be done with random ways, but it should be done for all.

Sort out the LEGAL sites, and the ILLEGAL users will follow. I dont agree with people just ripping all the music, people have to pay for things in life, but only when its worth paying for.

That's what I said, its got NOTHING to do with RS, MS, Usenet, FTP etc....

Investigators will monitor copyright-infringing BitTorrent swarms and log Virgin Media IP addresses, which will be passed on to the ISP to identify the customers.

On the RS front though, bear in mind that RS keep your details and log your downloads. My crystal ball can see the day a court will force them to hand over those records....

But then, who gives a ....;-)
#33
You don't give any details except your ip to Rapidshare. unless they get paypal to hand over the details of who paid them and then filter that list.

Its easier just to fold the company (RS) when/if you ever get that sort of court order and set up as a new one.

I can already hear the next gen of punk

"when they kick at your front door,
how you gonna come
with your hands on router
or the trigger of your ctrl-alt-del" - P2P of Brixton.

Ok, I'm being stupid. But we'll be telling our kids I was there in 'The P2P riots of 2009'... None of us can drive anywhere anymore cus its so damn expensive to we stayed in to download Amy Whinehouse and we became so insensed that this is what we was reduced to we all just started burning the communications industries to the ground...

All because of a letter! I hope they do start disconnecting actually, it'd be an easy way to get out of a contract with these ISP crooks
