AVG Free is great, so that wasn't your problem. I suggest you install Google Toolbar which has a pop-up blocker built in (also fab). I would also look to install NoAdware or Spybot or similar (www.download.com) and run these.
First thing to do is remove ALL traces of every anti-virus from your system as dual protection will knacker it.

Good luck.

It's not a virus. AVG is perfectly capable of handling those.

It sounds to me like you have spyware/adware rather than a virus. There's some more free software for this that might do the trick:
Spybot Search & Destroy
Ad Aware 2008

A full re-format would be the most effective option, and it's the best way to give your computer a complete clean...

have already installed the google toolbar but no the ******s still appear, and the free avg will not quarentine/delete any ov the infection just says put in valut then nothing there still there?

Google toolbar just blocks popups from websites you are visiting.

This will be a little application which has downloaded itself onto your computer and is showing popups without you even needing to visit any websites. We call these Adware as they're trying to place adverts on your computer, rather than destroy your computer like a virus would or send information back to the maker like Spyware might.

It's still nasty stuff, and can be a sod to get rid of.

Do a virus scan with AGV then if you have any move them to the virus volt

Hi there Paul. What you got to keep in mind is your anti virus / firewall / spyware is only as good as you set it. This applies for firewalls especially. So perhaps if you aint too knowledgeable about this sort of stuff get a friend to customise your firewall.

Having said that I'm sure the majority of HUKD would agree the likes of Norton, Mcafee (or Bitdefender as your using at the moment) have nothing on Kaspersky. Personally I've been using it for years and I would never change. The nearest competitor to it is NOD32.

You can download a trial of Kaspersky (Internet Security Suite 7.0) for 30 days from kaspersky.com and if you are to purchase it you'll get a free upgrade when version 8.0 is released in a couple of months. [I'm sure there was a very good deal on Kaspersky, check the deals section here on HUKD].

There's not really anything to suggest that expensive programs are any better than the free versions I have shown you.

Let's try something else. :) This is for XP, it's very similar for Vista if that's what you have...

Go to the Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > System > System Restore

Hopefully you will get a screen that looks like this:

http://www.theeldergeek.com/images/System%20Restore/System%20Restore%201.gif

Click on restore my computer to an earlier time. Click on next. You should see this:

http://askbobrankin.com/sysres2.jpg

This is the REALLY important bit. Click on a date that is BEFORE you started getting these problems. So if it started about a week ago then go two weeks back, etc.

This won't delete any emails, documents, downloads, etc - but it WILL affect any programs you have installed.

Click on next. And carry on following instructions. Eventually, your computer will re-start and restore.

Hopefully the problem will be solved... if not then re-formatting is probably the only option. If it has worked then you should probably re-install AVG from http://free.grisoft.com to reduce the chance of future disasters.

get 'the guy' to sort it out properly if you paid him.

if you requested and paid for a format / fresh install then that is what you should have got. Sounds like he spent all of 2 minutes on it installing AVG.

Why not format / install windows yourself. It is very easy.

Ripped off then.

But then, getting someone to do a full reinstall for you, usually costs a loooot more than that.
PC repairers thrive on ppl that dont know what they are doing, as its easy prey.

He just got £30 for something you can do in literally 5 minutes.
Doubt he even bothered defraggin as doing that is totally pointless.

Full reinstall takes a lot longer that that, so they will charge you a small fortune for it.
I know as my dad got someone to do it before and it was £75 (i was on 12hr shifts and he was impatient lol)

If you have an XP disc and a Drivers disc.
Do it yourself, it will save you a fortune, and you will learn a lot more about the PC in case it happens again.
Its really not difficult to do either, as it pretty much does it all for you.
All you do is click OK, press enter or input your name for the PC lol.

just remember to backup any important stuff first as it will all disappear.

Maybe just try a windows re-install first. easy peasy.

http://www.google.co.uk/search?source=ig&hl=en&rlz=1G1GGLQ_ENXX247&q=how+to+reinstall+windows&btnG=Google+Search

and get your £30 back!
