i got a samsung dual core laptop with vista - battery life is really good, m old laptop with xp the battery life wasnt as good, but really depends on the laptop spec.

I would say there isnt much difference , only down to your personal preference

most new laptops come with vista these days, which is a shame because is uses much more resources than xp. so if you can get a laptop with xp and great specs go for it, some manufactures will give you a free vista upgrade disc anyway.

i am now with vista after years of xp and can honestly say a find it much easier and quicker to use on my laptop, just make sure your laptop has a good cpu say core2duo and minimum say 2GB of ram if not you are better sticking with xp. Hope that helps :)

vista has an anti piracy feature to it, so if you going to be downloading them movies from torrent sites may be work going for xp .
i personally dont like vista to many restrictions on it .
but its down to your preferences, try looking up reviews on the net or go in to a pc world and blitz them with questions.

Much the same for me, loving it now after upgrading to 2gb ram

After using on laptop for six months I find it is fine for everyday things but the start up and shutdown is very slow especially after updates. Still use Xp for video work etc

My vista ultimate laptop downloads torrents just fine so i'm not quite sure what you mean by that

Personally I prefer XP as Vista does too much for you.

Vista looks great but if you have older applications that you use they may not work. I have Dreamweaver MX and it would not run correctly under Vista so I installed XP.

Had vista a year now and really wish I'd stuck with xp. it looks pretty but I must spend hours each week trying to get things to work properly and I'm a computer programmer so I would hope I know what I'm doing. Its a pile of junk and MS know it or they wouldnt still be supporting xp to the level they do (XP SP3 due soon). Make sure if you do get a Dell, to reformat immediately and reinstall the OS again else you'll be plagued with Dellware!

This is a very good thing for anyone to do that has bought a new PC/Laptop

Be warned though as I wiped off Vista from my Acer laptop and installed my copy of XP. I then needed to find all the Drivers to get things working with XP rather than Vista.

Do not get me wrong it is worth doing but it may take a little longer than just a normal reinstall.

erm, so how does the 'anti-piracy' feature have any bearing on torrent software? :whistling:

OP - in my opinion, if you arent too bothered by Vista's undeniable eye-candy, go for xp - it will 'feel' much more responsive and with SP3 out it is rumoured to be getting some further performance gains and the inevitable security updates. just my 2p worth obviously.,,

Is it normal for vista updates to take soo bloody long? I'm talking over an hour sometimes. Bloody annoying.

If running Vista, make sure you have 2GB ram, I've found that to be the main problem for Vista - I don't find performance to be an issue and certainly on a reasonable machine Vista runs no slower than XP.

Many people seem to trivialise Vista as being a bloated XP with fancy eye candy and completely ignore all the benefits, there's small aspects such as the file copy(if an error is detected rather than abort the whole thing and leave a partial transfer you get options how to deal with it), proper scaling interface and native hdv capture with WMM which I miss when going back to XP. My main complaint with Vista is simply the lack of support/admin tools, hypterminal is gone, telnet isn't there by default, runas is gone if running as admin and you have no advanced file type control any more.

I ordered my computer without an OS and got all the driver CDs with it so it was painless to to install XP on it

I would have thought all good retailers do this?

Yes, but when you go from Vista back to XP then presumably one only has a new XP install disk without the relevant dell driver disk for XP.

Have jsut ordered the Dell hot deal with Vista basic. What are the differences between the Vistas?

thanks

apart from backup...don't know what most of it all is, so ? would not have missed it...

backup is essential IMHO so try get hold of Acronis true Image or Genie Backup Manager Professional (GBM Pro). Sometimes available on Computer Shopper magazine disks.

Best thing to do is:-

1. format HDD
2. reinstall vista
3. Install all your software and get it just as you want it
4. Do a full image backup to external HDD or DVD

Then whenever your pc slows up/hdd breaks/vista corrupts, then you can get back to perfect image within 30 minutes rather than reinstall of everything which can take hours!

Believe me, its worth the initial effort, especially with Vista.

john is right, too many people are vista-bashing unfairly - it certinaly does have soem excellent UI developments (like the file-copy/replace dialog and so on) and it will be very good after a service pack or two, personally though, i have found the same hardware (inc. 2gb ram) to feel more responsive under xp than vista....

and of course you dont get remote desktop (legally) with most versions of vista now, that's just annoying ;-)
