Vodafone mobile - You have to laugh!!!

Just returned from a trip to Thurrock, where Vodafone have a stand in PCWorld showing their USB laptop mobile dongles. I asked the details and told its £15pm and the speed was 7.8Mb. Wow - thats fast I though - much better than my 1.8Mb from T-Mobile at £7.50pm.

So I give it spin and do a speedtest on "thinkbroadband" and the speeds come back slower than what I currently get on a supposedly slower connection!

Hardly impressive stuff - and in an area that should have excellent coverage. Amusingly he countered that they were better than "Three" - but then they dont claim to have a 7.8Mb connection either!

To be honest i think whoever told you that in PC World was talking out of their backside...
Vodafones mobile broadband is capable of speeds of 2.8 Mbps up to 3.6Mbps and gives the user a 3Gb data allowance. This data allowance is subject to fair usage therefore if you were to exceed that allowance within reason, you wouldn't be charged (unlike 3 who charge 10p per Mb over).
I work in a well known mobile phone retailers (not vodafone however, so im not bigging them up and favouring them because of that). We sell mobile broadband dongles for all networks and of them all i'd say vodafone is probably the best deal, especially now as they have just slashed their price from £30 per month to £15 per month for the above plan.

And these dongles are the future... plug and play internet at your fingertips - no landline or cable needed.

Well Im not going to argue about him talking out of his backside - but Vodafone DO quote 7.2Mb

Looking around, it appears that there are quite a variety of options available - and the amount of bandwidth they allow. £15 for 3GB isnt that bad. There are still some landline companies that charge more for less!

Fancy paying £20 for a 2MB connection and 1GB allowance!

Ha ha. Sneaky! It should say "The modem can connect at speeds up to 7.2Mbps - but we've got a cr*p network and can only give you up to 2.8Mbps!"

As mentioned earlier, I'm using T-Mobile via a Vario 3. I know you are not supposed to use it as a modem - but hey, they dont seem to notice! Anyway, Thinking that doing so, will push my downloads up a fair bit, but having just checked my account, it seems I am now only upto 85MB after 10 days this month. Obviously just surfing the net - and for 30 minutes in the morning and evening (train journey) and upto 2 hours at lunch (I get long lonch breaks!!!!). So I doubt I would ever get anywhere near the 1GB limit unless I started using usenet to download on it (Which would be pointless with a 16MB unlimited connection at home.

Still slightly tempted though - I'd rather leave the phone as a phone and not connect it up - even though it gives it a power boost! If I ever see a deal that brings the price down to a tenner, I'll grab it! As it happens, I do have a PCMCIA Vodafone card. Are these cards simlocked? (As you can guess - I havent tried!!!!)

I do wish O2 would pull their finger out! Their tarrifs are still complete pants!
