I think debranding needs the software changing, but i am not sure.
I know last year Vodafone phones were being issued unlocked or if they were locked vodafone would unlock them for free as i had a couple of vodafone phones and did this.
I presume this is still the case.
This was the statement from Jan 08
Vodafone will supply a Network Unlock Code (NUC) for you if you've purchased a phone from us on either Contract or Pay As You Talk (PAYT) (* not applicable for the BlackBerry Storm - see post three on this thread). An NUC allows you to use non-Vodafone SIM cards inside your Vodafone handset.

If you got the phone with a contract the NUC will be free of charge, regardless of its age, as all new contract phones are now dispatched unlocked.
If the phone is a PAYT handset over 12 months old the code will also be free of charge.
If it's a PAYT handset that's less than 12 months old a charge of £19.99 including VAT would apply. The £19.99 will need to be credited to your phone before you apply for the code. Once the NUC has been issued the charge will be debited.

If you got your phone on a contract and it is locked, a simple call to them will get it unlocked FOC,
For de-branding, search for user Item number: 320340725037 and he/she is selling that software on Fleabay. I bought of him and it's so easy to do. I paid about £5 from him, but he's recently dropped to £3.75.
It definetly makes the phone faster and easier to use.

You shouldn't need to pay for software to debrand as the main one (Nemesis) is a free download, it simply works by allowing you to change the product code so that when you hook it up to the Nokia software updater it updates your phone with a generic edition rather than the branded version.

How do you know which product code to use with each model? The item I bought came with these for all sorts of Nokia phones.

Just search for the type you want, they're easy to find - many sites maintain lists showing all the different product codes for various regions and types.

I had a 5800 for a week on vodafone upgrade, I thought it was pants. Poor GUI, poor touchscreen response, didn't like the raised edge, cheap plasticky look and feel, bendy screen etc etc. I am used to Symbian (had an N95 8GB) but I found this s l o w.
I compared it to a friends iphone and the 5800 was outclassed in almost every way. Even the supposed excellence of the dedicated sound card on the 5800 sounded no better to me than my N95 8GB.
If you can do without the 'slightly' better camera on the 5800 (I wasn't impressed with it) and the mms thing etc then go for an iphone. I've just ordered one.
5800 on PAYG = £250 + min £5 pm web = £310 over 12 months
iphone on PAYG = £340 with free web for 12 months
£30 more, but in my opinion a vastly superior bit of kit, like 5 times as good.
Just thought I'd add my opinion for anyone who is not sure. I wouldn't have bothered with the 5800 if I had known.
PS I am not anti-Nokia or pro-Apple, but I just like quality kit
