After you go over the lmit it willl cost £5/500MB so yeah that would cost you a lot of money if you went over. I'm with o2 too and have never had this problem but the girlfriend is with Vodafone and goes over quite a lot so is quite worried about this.

its been discussed to death on a number of forums, why anyone would go with vodafone is beyond me.

Would this be a way out of contract early?

A lot think so and vodafone have said if you can prove that the new charges will increase your contract cost by more than 10% you can cancel for free. But whenever I have called up (countless times now) they have no idea whats going 0n and say that we have to pay the cancelation fee of the rest of the contract (£400 or something). So good luck trying to cancel your contract. Also ofcom says that they need to give you 1 months notice of these charge and you can opt-out for free if you don't agree with them but vodafone says they will only warn you 7 days before they make the chage (it's 6 days left till the change in 16 minutes) and only to the 3% that go over the fair use limit and if they can prove they will be charged over 10% of there normal following a review of your monthly usage over the past 3-months.
