OK... buying a laptop in the morning (after checking my bank account). I've heard good things about the Inspiron 6400. Very good battary life, good sound, etc. On the downside it doesnt look very good and is quite chunky. I blame you Mike.. lol :P

imo you want to forget all the bs Dell give you and just look at the specs.

You haven't really stated what you want it for. But I'd get the Second option, only because I prefer Intel.

Well, Im a student.. so im buying a laptop to take abroad, and keep up with my studies... music, watching videos, perhaps a bit of gaming here and there (so at the moment I'm edging towards Intel) . and cheers for the feedback james.

my deal at comet for the HP 399 one is good, search the deals mate
#5
If im on a 7 hour plane journey.. I'd rather that the intel does 5 hours than the amd which does 45 mins (as stated in some reviews) but I dunno... the graphics wins it for me.
#6
Does the AMD gobble the juice? hmm i didnt know that, wonder why that is?
#7
I had the same dilema yesterday and went for the Vostro for the following reasons....

1. More durable (spill proof keyboard).
2. Faster chip and 64bit.
3. Slightly better graphics
4. I like the black, non-fussy look. I have seen both in the flesh and IMHO the Vostro looks classier.
5. Business warranty is better (I think)

OTOH
Inspiron has firewire.
Intel chips have a better name.
Sound card is better in Inspiron.

Oh and BTW, the AMD has a TDP of either 31 or 35w depending on the chip revision which is hardly gobbling the juice.

woo..just found this thread.
In the same boat.
A better CPU in vostro, black, newer design..but not as good speakers and less interfaces
#9
Just thought i'd let you guys know... I went for the vostro. The design did it for me lol..
#10
what kind of Vostro did you go for? 1000?
#11
In reality, this will be used by the gf.
The 6400 has a multimedia style layout...so you can skip tracks etc, and is better for sound too. And is silver.
But the vostro is a better machine (but it wont be stretched by surfing and word anyway :S)
Still cant pick
