Do you mean the mic she speaks in to and people can't hear her or the speaker at the top and she can't hear people???

I believe All SonyEriccsons have a 2 year manufacturers warranty. Take it back and get them to send it away for repair.

is it just blocked with fluff? Not much electronically that can go wrong that would make the sound quieter. Try getting a can of air duster and blowing it out?

Replace the mic, about £4 http://tinyurl.com/5auhrf no soldering just take the old one out and drop the new one in its place they simply sit on the connectors, first though i'd try re-seating the original one as it may simply have come out of position slightly thus increasing the resistance on the connection and lowering the sensitivity.

it doent look like theirs any duct blocking it. How easy is it to open and then replace the mic? im not very technical!

imagine a match box stuffed to the brim with tiny high powered springs just waiting to burst out the second you even open it a fraction..........

Farly easy, just remember what goes where! This may help:
guide to opening

Have you tested the mic in service mode yet?
Test the microphone in the service menu:
RIGHT, *, LEFT, LEFT, *, LEFT, *
Then select the "Service tests" option and select the "Microphone", then say something while recording. If you don't hear anything after the recording, your microphone is not working
