wages help

lisajohnsonxxxlisajohnsonxxx

just wondering if anyone can help me. i got paid yesterday and i noticed it said of my wage slip 't_s_deds -4hours'. i've recently had a new manager at work and i asked him about it, he said my old manager has put that i've missed a shift which i haven't or he's over spent on the budget so took wages off people which he shouldn't do anyway. he said theres nothing that i can really do about it. is this true? or is there a way of getting it back? i've also been underpaid

With the way things are these days, unless it is a massive company that you can speak to HR about the issue, I would keep quiet.

Why don't you make an appointment with your local citizens advice bureau they'll be able to sit you down and explain most things. Hope it works out.

should get them to confirm the hours on the rota then
should be a tax code on the payslip even if dont pay it
just contact hm revenue if unsure
but if you aint been taxed before lol bet they take some off ya

The only thing you can do is go to your manager. Problem is if you don't like it, they will tell you where to go! - Employers are in the driving seat at the moment which is why, if it is not a massive amount of money, best to leave it.

if it wasn;t much i would leave it, but they owe me about 17 hours

I'm sorry to hear about that, as anchorman said try talking to citizens advice or HR/Payroll and go through your hours with them if you have proof of shifts.
I'm glad you questioned it as its your hard earned money and if you have worked them you deserve to get paid for it.
    Really hope your sort it!

Raise it in writing as a "formal grievance", stating that you are raising this as a formal grievance under the companies grievance policy (they should have one, if they say they dont - still refer to it as a "formal grievance".)

State you case (i.e the hours worked, disputed amount.) and ask politely to be paid as a matter of urgency. Give a reasonable time for response (7 days ish) - and ensure you ask for any response to be in writing (do not allow them to deal with this verbally as you need to have a record in case you need to take it further - the only exception to this would be a formal hearing which should be recorded or accurately minuted)

If they dont respond, or try to palm you off - contact ACAS for advice. You may have a claim at an employment tribunal for an "unlawful deduction from wages".

In fact, it is problably worth giving ACAS a call before you do anything.

Basically, you must show that they have made a mistake, you have given them the opportunity to rectify their error and they have refused unreasonably or ignored you.

EDIT:Ask in you grievance for a written copy of the companies grievance procedure - if you do not already have it. If they say they do not have one - ask them to state this in writing. I should add that if they do not acknowledge your grievance and do not either pay you or arrange a full hearing to hear your claim then this may be "automatically unfair" at a tribunal.

Age and education status has nothing to do with been taxed, the amount you earn determines it.

Agreed. It's very common for people to believe you don't get taxed for being a student. Also very wrong too. You get taxed the moment you hit the tax barrier (which I believe is around £145p/w)

elliff sounds like he/she knows what they are talking about. May be best to raise it again informally, politely and firmly first though and if they are still dragging their feet point out "you'd rather not go down the formal route".

Just be absolutely sure you have your facts right and backed up, and document every part of the process as you pursue your claim.

    It sounds like ****-poor management.

It is pretty horrible out there jobs-market-wise and you can live more safely by following aircanman's "be a little bitch all your life" advice, but a far better way to protect yourself against the whims of incompetent employers is to be professional and hard -working, and build your skills so you are more valuable and consider joining a union who can give you proper advice and legal backing if you should ever need it.

    My advice for you.

Nr.1 it might be an innocent mistake, so just mention this for a start. Sometimes people make mistakes, wrote something wrong on the sheet, or made in input error, we are humans.

Nr 2 they are rats, so the "mistake" might be on purpose which makes somehow sense considering they underpaid you as well.
(Also check with other co workers, if they also have "mistakes" then you might get closer to the truth)

Its good that you ask for advice, many people just stay quiet.
