Just wanted to remind ppl to becareful who you're dealing with.

I've got an account which I only use for buying/selling stuff and I've just taken a call from bank saying there are about 10 transactions on my account which don't match my spending patterns. All 10 transactions are fraudulant and they'll be changing my bank account etc straight away.

But just becuase you've spoke to a person etc still be careful !!

Are you talking about buyers here on HUKD?

Theres alot of fraud happening, c alot of it in my job. Credit cards give better protection, try not to give out bank account numbers.

I'm curious. How does the knowledge of a person's sort code and account number give them access to the funds in the account?

If you're an individual, how does a credit card help you to be paid? Don't you have to have a trading account with a credit card company?

It doesn't.
It's possible that they could set up a Direct Debit to pay a business, but this is highly unlikely to benefit them.

direct debits can e set up with just that information though

This doesn't make sense to me. There is more risk giving out your paypal than bank account details, especially now that most banks require a card reader for online transactions. And if DD/SO are set up wihout your consent you are covered by your bank. The OP needs to give more detail before his claim tallies ...

But what happened............people can't purchase directly with bank account details.

As mentioned they can try signing up for DD but you'd receive notification to your home address.

There's no way I could know 100% if its related to here but all i know is that this is one of, if not the only place I've used that account..

Like I said, just wanted to remind ppl to be careful..

As for what happened, bank called to say that they'd noticed some transactions that didn't match my spending style (or something like that) so that wanted to check if I'd purchased anything from america, or any top ups in the last couple of days. There were lots of different network top ups and a few amounts for american websites that I'd never heard of. Luckily I never keep large amounts in there so it had highlighted on their side as the account doesn't have an overdraft either

Cheers for the Xbox live subscription and the rapidshare account!

See, this is the point with it. Anyone that did that would be traced immediately and would get no-where except charged for fraud. lol

Someone would need your card numbers for that though, not your bank details
