Washing Machine from Asda - About 18 months old - Chance of them repairing/replacing/refunding?

I bought a Whirlpool AWO/R4205 washing machine from Asda about 18 months ago for £180.

The only problem I had had before today was the plastic drum lifters snapped inside (paddles to rotate the laundry inside) - but Whirlpool sent me new ones to slot in.

This afternoon when the wife was doing some washing there was a bang, and the service light on the front of the machine came on.

Now, when trying to put it on a cycle (ie. rinse/spin) it will fill with water, but the drum will not rotate. Possibly the belt snapped?

The machine has got progressivly louder as the months have gone on.

What do you recon my chances of getting a repair/exchange/refund from Asda?

Covered under sales of goods act you think?

Thanks for any advice in advance.

i think when the drum wont turn its the "brushes"

years back mines used to do that and my brother showed me how to replace them myself - skint knuckles by the end of it but the brushes were only a few pounds to buy

sorry that hasnt answered ur question really has it !! am sure someone can help you though!

I got a 3 year old hotpoint integrated dishwasher replaced under SOGA. However, I could actually prove it wasnt of merchandisable quality, since it had been repaired loads of times and the engineer finally said there was a flaw in its construction. In my mind, hotpoint should have just replaced, but i had to go to the shop. They werent interested at first, but i soon made them aware in the error of their ways!

If I had to buy another hotpoint product, I'd just use the sink instead and save my money. (Or better still buy anything other than hotpoint!)

Hotpoint and Indesit are famous for it. To be honest though, I wouldn't have a washing machine without some kind of warranty to cover repairs. I' ve currently got an Indesit and the engineers have been out LOADS of times, brushes, paddles like yours, door rubber.... and it's still not 5 years old.

To be honest, it's not the machine I would have chosen, but I was given a selction to order from as my last machine was deemed uneconomic to repair whilst under a 5 yr warranty!

£180 is extremely cheap for a washing machine.

Why don't you ask them?

Try writing to Asda customer services. I bought a tv from Tesco which broke after 18 months and guarantee was only for 12 months. I described the problem to prove that the fault was not caused by myself and so tv was not of merchantable quality but they did give me 75% of my money back in Tesco vouchers. Worth a try.
