Thinking about getting a water softener for house as we live in a very hard water area.

Any experience / advice with these?

I think you'll find the correct term for hard water is "ice" and the correct method of softening ice is to heat it.

we were told by our plumber not to get an electric one, he fitted us a Scalemaster Softline 150 Water Softener, its non electric yet still fully automatic , it has no motors or wires and the moving parts are operated by water pressure. Works fine with less chance of it going wrong.
