We had to go to Great Ormond Street Hospital yesterday with our Little Girl, we go twice a year. She's a fab little girl, and what she has wrong with her just doesn't compare with the ordeal that other parents have to go through!

Our rotten luck happened after putting £8 in the parking meter (we did it in 2 installments as our appointment went over the expected time) and even though we were displaying a valid parking ticket, we still got a parking fine for £80 now, or £160 if not paid within 2 weeks.

Well we took a photo of the ticket on the car and kept all together for evidence - so all seems well. But, we went to the car today to get the papers and ticket proof to find that all is gone. So now we will have to pay the fine on top of the £8 we had paid, and the expense of travelling into London.

What an expensive day - that money could have been put to far better use, and it's just not fair as we had paid and displayed correctly!

Sorry moan over - but I really HATE those wardens now.

I know it does make us feel sick - and it adds more stress to our relationship, and what was already a stressful day!

Though it is only money - we can get over it! It always helps to vent doesn't it.

That is unlucky, sorry to hear that. I don't suppose the photo you took of the ticket showed up any of the info on it at all. It might be worth trying to use that if it does - you never know

I think it should be a point of law that all parking at hospitals should be free.

I know you can ask for those special parking waivers if you have to stay in overnight in some cases but really, it's making money out of someone's illness which in turn might put some people off attending the hospital if they're watching the pennies.

I'm so sorry to hear about your bad luck. I hope your little girl is doing fine x x

Were they fining you for 'feeding' the meter maybe?

how did they get the papers from in the car?

Cheers all thanks for your support... If only moral.

I will try to use the photo's but I don't rate our luck.

I think Hospital parking should be free too - often hospital visits are stressful for most people, and having to find the money and the time to display when you are in a hurry adds to it.

Luckily our appointment isn't an emergency - Our little girl is absolutely wonderful and she most likely will lead an almost full and normal life as most people (god willing).

My heart breaks when I see some Kids up there though.

My husbands mood is lightening up a little now - I can breathe a little better - phew!

No I checked the papers - we were allowed to park there for 2 hours. They had us there for 1.5 hours. We returned to the car within the 2 hour slot. - All that we did was pay as much change as we had - then having gone to the appointment realising we weren't going to have enough time, got more change and topped up to our 2 hour entitlement. You get given a pay and display ticket - which was clearly displayed.

I think the papers must have fallen out as I dropped my husband off - when he returned to work.

Or when I did the school run once I got home.

The problem with making hospital parking free is that it would be abused. Other businesses nearby would use it and staff would use it, leaving little, if any space for visitors and patients. There would need to be some other system in place where you can claim back expenses perhaps.
I hope you manage to get sorted.

it is heartbreaking and frustrating especially if you are at the hospital on a very regular basis, but Bellas comments sum it up, people would use up genuine spaces for the relations and patients if they were free and a claim back scheme would be the ideal solution

Thanks for the info - will take a look at those links in the morning when I am less tired.

I shall check Westminster Councils Website too - as I need to find the ticket info.

Thanks again

i think it is because you 'fed' the meter - if you contact the hospital i thought they could give you something that gets the fee waived because you have genuine proof of an appointment - worth asking

Just for those who don't know - If you have to park at a hospital for a long time, it is worth enquiring whether there are discounts available. Hospital Reception desk or the ward you are visiting can usually give advice.
For example, at Southampton General Hospital the maximum you need pay is £6 for all day, but you must get a certificate from the ward. (This is to prevent illicit use of the car park.)
Also, if you know you will be visiting the hospital for many days, you can get a 7-day ticket for £14 which entitles you to unlimited use of the car park - much cheaper than paying £6 every day.
Similar arrangements are probably available at other hospitals. Remember to enquire!

Excellent News:

I found the ticket in a garden near the school! One of the mums said she had seen someone looking at it 2 days ago, and told me where - so I went and looked around in the bushes.

Funny how now I feel fortunate!

Thankyou everyone for your help - I can now appeal against the ticket

Sorry if I've missed this, was your ticket issued by a private parking company on behalf of the hospital or is it a council issued PCN? As always I'd highly recommend the forums over at http://forums.pepipoo.com if you want any help with your ticket
