www.110mb.com ....... free and easy to use ......

will work with any type of file except asp (but im guessing your using html)

the best bet would be to make the site then upload to 110mb as there "html tool" is absolute carp

but i highly recommend 110mb as all my sites are with them

Not sure here either...?

It won't make a difference if you're on XP, Vista, Windows 3.1. You get the HTML files to the web server via an FTP program.

Search Google for Coffee Cup FTP - I use it and it's fine, completely free.

Just enter the server setting for UK2.net which I assume you still have? If not, I am sure you can get them easily off their website.

Seriously, you spend all that money on Dreamweaver and Photoshop and you don't know how to use FTP programs??????

it maybe that his old host supported frontpage extensions and he published directly that way and the new host won't. in which case ftp is the easiest option

check the website as is on www.ballydougandogs.co.uk and should likely explain it to the teckies as is.

using cuteftp to upload as before, in fact nothing has changed with the website pages or construction,, nor was it updated since the annual subscription which is when things started to go pear shaped.

tried uk2 customer service and tech support and got nowhere with them. kept getting sent to control panel and it wouldnt play ball. doing my head in.

Need site up right in next 2 months when have pups.

wondering if best to stay with uk2 when find the problem or move to something more foolproof!

help....!

cute ftp isnt problem, can use it fine. have built own site for years. if knew what problem was would be step further on. i probably uploading something i shouldnt or dont need which argues with the new format and control panel uk2 are using.

let me know what you think

try going to your control panel & renaming the main file index.html ...... no capital letters

the reason you get that on the page is the web server (apache) cannot find the index file, it has to end in .html, .php etc and be without capitals

let me know if this works

Yeah, thats what I thought - its currently set to Index, change it to index.html and that should be ok

You have uploaded all your site inside a directory called index/

As you can see here: http://www.ballydougandogs.co.uk/Index/

And yes, I would probably advise moving away from UK2

When you FTP can you try to go UP the directory tree? Maybe where you have uploaded rather than a fault with UK2

Horses for courses. Everyone will have their own favorites.

Will you only be hosting this one domain? Personally, I always throw 34sp.com and liquidsix.com into the frame. Extremely reliable and customer service and support is second to none. (I think you now realise why thats a good idea!!!)

You can get cheaper (and dearer) but think their prices are good based on the above.

110MB if its a fun site (not business related) should be OK - but there are some limitations.

1&1 are a nightmare IMHO. Try contacting them for DNS or transfer problems for example.

Having helped quite a few people away from 1&1 because of the problems of this hosts making, i think its a justified comment!

i use velnet, not cheap but reliable and great support

I use Dreamhost. £7 a month, massively reliable God knows how many GBs of storage I have, but it's a LOT and 1TB of bandwidth a month.

Hmmmmm. Again, fine if the site isnt that important.

Think my account with them is currently standing at nearly 420GB of space - and god knows what bandwidth!

Fine for play sites and storage though.

customer support, indeed you have a good point there!

yes only the one domain, thats challenging enough for me to keep updating. lol

thankfully new pc means less trouble, so that should help as well, last one as knacked as me! thankfully saved the
website data before scrapping but will have to get a drive to back this up, no more nightmares req.

The site is small but relatively important as it allows our pet clients to get an idea of how good we are from
how it runs/looks, before they consider contacting us. Just what i would do too in their place. Didnt find my uk2 site great for loading
time or keeping music running/starting quuickly. maybe that me though rather than them, yet again...

Thanks for the info...

Constructive criticism:

1) Lose the music (It can be irritating to some people)
2) Front page - Don't use all capital letters it makes it harder to read, also space the writing out for the same reason.
3) On some of the pages PUPS & GALLERY resize the images with an image editor as the images are unnecessarily large for the way you've used them.
4) On the contact us page you have a hotmail email address, you've got a web domain so why not use that, it'll look more professional (e.g. [email protected]...co.uk">[email protected]...co.uk).

thanks will take that onboard, and will tweak more when its up and running again. have 3wks til current host runs out in which to get things up and running. cheers les

regarding the email it was costing too much for using uk2 forwarding, and since dont get mega email enquiries was way too dear. another reason want better host!

Hotmail seems popular with young couples who seem to love pugs. but maybe will be best to ask all my previous customers what they would change. hadnt thought of that til now. thanks.

Then I would suggest Dreamhost, there was a thread on here which had a discount code that gave you the first year for under £20 though I can't seem to find it, if you are going down that route then just google for dreamhost codes and you should find something.

Edit: Just noticed this http://www.dreamhoststatus.com/2009/01/03/dreamhost-and-panel-sluggish/all-comments/#comments something to take on board before going with Dreamhost.

I forward ALL of my domains to my gmail account. When sending, I use gmail and they are sent FROM the domain name they were addressed to. Dont ever pay for something that works really well!

Hehe. I know the thread well. I posted it! :w00t:

Dont use Dreamhost for this project. Its only really useful for large storage. Time lag is poor. OK for personal stuff, but not for a business.

I give out loads of space to members here. If you want, I will create an account for you to play with. However, as previously mentioned, 34SP is the one Id recommend.

oK that makes sense indeed. Thanks for the feedback. will get this host thing sorted out eventually. no one seems to be perfect for the small guy to manage. drat.
