Basically been trying to improve my wife's driving school's website rank on google etc - so I've been updating our details via a few free referral sites. Not long after I get a number of calls from companies offering their services - saying they can put us on the 1st page of google's sponsored links.

Can anyone verify the following email blurbs from these companies and tell me if they're genuine, or if I'm wasting my time considering this option for increased advertising?

I personally wouldn't advise paying for this, unless you are turning over a massive profit and competing for business with similar sized companies. You can do alot yourself, but you need to look at SEO techniques rather than using submission and referral sites.

Things that help are Metatags, Picture names, Heading and image naming conventions, accessibility, descriptions, titles etc.

You'll learn loads if you type in SEO techniques into Google.

Cheers.

Done a fair amount of detailing on the site using Google's guide to SEO - it's a very small site so perhaps I need to add some more pages to it - or change it to a CMS to make it easier for me to edit and add things - as I aint too savvy with html etc.

Kinda thought this might help as business is tight just now - always is post-Xmas - but need to get some clients fast!

Thanks for your input - repped.

Can I make a suggestion - most people who are looking at learning to drive will not use the internet to search for an instructor, but instead are more likely to rely on personal recommendations from friends / colleagues or family.

Instead of pumping money into getting your wives website further up the googel rankings why dont you consider alternative marketing menthods? Personally, I would suggest advertising where your catchment audience are most likely to see it - why not speak to local colleges and 6th form schools and ask if you can advertise in their common rooms? Also why not write to all ex-pupils offering them a "referral fee" if someone books a minimum block of lessons with your wife?

Top advice above - also worth looking at the better ranked driving school sites in your area to see what keywords they are using in page text and as picture names.

Agree with what you're saying to an extent, although we used to get a lot of business via the site, as that's where a lot of kids go looking initially.

We used to get lots of business via word of mouth, but my wife has only recently returned to work in the past few months after our son was born, therefore the word of mouth tends to dwindle somewhat.

We've got new business cards and leaflets printed and they arrived yesterday - just wanna get the site a bit more popular.

Cheers for your input, rep left.

Rule number 1: if a company ever says they can 'guarantee' natural search listings I'd be wary. Google in particular works on a complex algorithm where many, many things affect your position in the SERPs (although sometimes a few key factors can bump you up to a nice position).

I'd also say that whilst personal recommendation is probably the number one decision factor (as well as introductory offer and pass rate) for a driving instructor, many people will research the available ones online as part of the process.

Regional paid search and Google local business ads may be of use to you as well as natural search results.

not possible to get 1st page in 48 hours, unless they spam your website so you do get 1st page but it will drop down very fast, also very easy keywords so it's quite high price... read some tutorials about improving your position in search engine and you can run adwords for start to get some visitors, shouldn't be high cpc for that keyword, in the meantime add your site to free directories http://www.web-directories.ws/General/Free/ but not more than 3-4 a day and social sites like twitter, digg.com etc... google is your friend...

had a look at their website and it looks very amateur... I wouldn't touch them..

No one can guarantee #1 ranking in Google, and no one works with Google to improve search rankings. Fake "seo" companies tell you they will get you #1 in your ranking and they have worked with Google so they know the inside tracks.

The only way to improve search engine rankings is brilliant content, meta keywords etc aren't used by Google anymore to rank websites.

The content needs to be cleanly written and without spamming the keywords. Google will penalise people for "keyword stuffing". I have done a lot of SEO work but will look at your website for you and show you where you can improve.

On another post, having a website can improve the number of sales, I found my driving school online and so are many others. Offering a special website price wil give people a reason to go to your site, and having some fun stuff like quizzes and mock tests are helpful. More and more people are turning to the web to find local services so having a website is a major advantage.

Send me a PM with your wife's website and I will scan through your site and give you some helpful tips of where to make some adjustments.

cosmicdave's advice is spot on.
You're saying business is slow, tbh I think you are looking in the wrong area for work, and spending too much time with your website..
As he said go to schools, college, sixth forms offer your services, do deals for new people, if they refer a friend.

Driving is such a competitive market, you need to have a niche!

Think to yourself, what do you offer different?
Intensive courses, are there many of those about in your area?

When i was learning to drive, when i was 17, i never once looked on the internet for an instructor, as said above its a word of mouth jobby, advertise in newsagents, fish and chips shops, taxi companies..

A website in my eyes for a driving instructor is for the small amount of people wanting to drive as in..
The majority of your sales should come from word of mouth advertising local area, and a website will be the minority.

Cheers
