I went to the wedding dress shop to collect my dress for my wedding in two months. Off I went in fitting room to try it on.
Dress fitter "Have you put on weight?"
Me (shocked)"No!"
Dress fitter"Either you have put on weight or the dress has been made in the wrong size. It's too small, and there is no way it will fit you."

She got me to try on the shop sample, and the the other fitter came over, got their measuring tapes out, and realised my dress had been made in the same size as the shop sample - a 12, rather than the size I need - a 16.

They told me not to panic, and that they would do the panicking for me :) They were very helpful, asked me to pick a back up dress from the shop just in case, but they would contact the manufacturer in the morning.

So, yesterday morning I got a phone call to say the manufacturer was amazed that this has happened, and he will pull out all the stops to get my dress made for me and delivered in time for the wedding. I will get a delivery date on Monday.

Now the problem. Wedding dresses are made to standard sizes like any other dresses, and still need alterations, I'll need an inch off the hem and I'll need the bust altered. The dress shop don't do these alterations, once I have the dress I'll need to get a dressmaker to do them for me. I have tried to book a dressmaker now, but cna't do this till I have the dress. I should have my dress in my possession now, and should be getting my alterations done now.

My mum has been giving me earache all morning saying that unless they manage to have the dress made and delivered in 2 weeks, which they won't, it'll probably be about 6, I won't have enough time for alterations. She wants us to go and buy another dress, just off the rails, and bring it home today, and have it altered. I'm not sure what to do. Will we lose the deposit paid on the original dress, or will they give it back as their error caused the problem?

I don't know what to do, all I know is I was so looking forward to my wedding, and now this has soured it all, I just want to cry and wish it was over now :(

awww hun :friends: how awful for you :-( i would wait until monday and see what they say the delivery date will be as you never know.... the thing is when you pick a wedding dress you know when you try it on if it's THE ONE!! So i wouldn't want to just go & buy another just yet if i were you :)

I would try and find a dress today. I bought one off teh rails and 6weeks b4 i got married as was spur of the moment decision . My original wedding plans were cancelled due to ill health in the family.

I never got the final fitting as the wedding shop had another person gettting married same weeknd as me and she had same name now my maiden name was fisher not exactly common.
Luckily my alterations were minor as this was final fitting. And yet they mucked up again when i went to collect i had ordered the hire of a hoop and they didnt have this ready so had to borrow one from the shop which i wasnt pleased about.

Oh no, sorry to hear this x x

As the dressmakers have "cocked up" so to speak, couldn't you give them your exact measurements for bust and length and get them to make it to the correct size? They probably don't normally do this but under the circumstances you'd think they'd make an exception.

Hun, you will be able to claim against the manufacturer as it is their error.

Where approximately do you live, my mum is a retired professional dressmaker, if you are not too far, I could ask her to look at coming to your house to make the alterations. Please dont panic, there is always a way

Your mum is right that it would be difficult to get the dress altered if you dont have it for another 6 weeks, it only leaves two weeks. Its not impossible if you have someone on hand to do it but if you dont then its tight. Is there anyone you know who has someone they know who can alter it? What you need is someone willing to listen to your problem and be willing to alter the dress at last minute. Alterations shouldnt take that long in itself but dressmakers are usually busy. My dress was made and fitted in only four weeks but I had a friend who recommended a good dressmaker.

Maybe someone here knows someone or is able to alter for you?

As for the deposit etc, you would need to speak to the shop,

Dont let this sour your big day, my reception venue got double booked and we only found out the week before, we sorted it all, all I remember now though is the day itself, not the problems before it. When you are actually there you will forget all about all the stress and problems, Good luck!:)

I would wait & see what the shop say - the wait for the dress to be made will probably be down to volume rather than how long the dress takes to make, and obviously they will have to seriously prioritize your new one in the right size! As to the alterations, surely the dressmaker would be sympathetic and let you book a slot in advance if you explain. You culd also get the shop to give you a discount and use tis to pay a retainer to the dressmaker ... don't panic buy something which isn't right until you know what the options are. :)

Sorry Tess, just a bit of banter between me and FC x x

Football chum, you're a honey. I'm in Whiteabbey, just outside Belfast.

I never thought about asking them to make it to my exact measurements, I'm sure it wouldn't entail that much extra work for them and really, it's make things much less stressful for me. I'll ask about that when I get the phone call on Monday morning.

Well its perhaps a last resort if required, you could fly to Leeds for around £50.

surely they should give you the deposit back but id wait and see what they say on monday, explain that you need the alterations done and if there willing to pull out all the stops then maybe they can do something to help. you will not be happy unless you have your dream dress . . . .on the other hand im a big believer in fate so maybe this dress wasnt for you, have a look round anyway maybe your dream dress is still out there, you just dont know it yet :)

iv not been much help have i :-D the only thing i could say is dont rush out today and pick up the first dress you see there are ways and means for everything.

good luck hun :friends:

I think the wait for the dress is as much to do with shipping than anything else. I really don't think any of these dresses are made in this country, they're probably all made in India or China (something I had never thought about before, now I'm guilt-tripping over poor working conditions).

If I could just stop thinking about it until I get a delivery date on Monday, but with my mum bending my ear,and so many other horror stories I can't stop worrying

You'd save yourself a small fortune.

I think FC would have liked his wife to have got married in her knickers

Oh bless, one of the worst things that can happen, but like every thing there is always a silver lining somewhere ! lol, the night before my wedding, my sister came home, (she was at uni at the time) well she came back and tried her dress on and it was to small ! she had had fittings and stuff.

What a nightmare, every one was so panicky, thank fully a family friend was the dress maker so came over at 11pm picked up the dress and was up all night. she had to unpick each seem and let out 2 mm. It was a real nightmare, but all good in the end !!

I'm sure it will work out, but would look for compensation as it is there fault and thats a pretty big mistake to make.

Good luck and i hope it all works out xx

Mothers of the bride are notoriously difficult, I got round this by organising it all myself and not really sharing any details, she saw the dress for the first time on the day. Maybe if you go out with a friend for a few hours you can placate her that you will look at dresses and see if you like any. Then relax have a walk, maybe into a nice pub couple of drinks and then chill. Tell her you didnt see anything that took yor fancy this afternoon but you are still looking.:-D
#29
Hehe Kidcat, that sounds good, and believe me I could use a few hours in the pub right now!

Aww hun, that's awful for u. Fingers crossed it will work out ok for u

can you not phone the shop and explain this to them, and see what they say
#32
I was tempted to phone the shop, but I think I'm just being pressurised by my mum who is being a drama queen. I'll hold my horses till the shop phone me back on Monday. I thought the planning was going really well until this happened!
#33
Alternatively you could take your mum for a drink and hope she forgets your troubles?
#34
Don't worry about it all. This is why you pick the dress up 2 months before just on case there is a hiccup. Wait to see what they say on Monday and then give them the problem. They can arrange someone to do the alterations as it is their mistake or tell them you will cancel, they want your business!!!
You could always get another dress off the peg just in case??!! As long as you can take it back. You may find something off the peg that doesn't need alterations as a just in case.
#35
Hope this gets sorted out today - looking forward to hearing how it goes :)
#36
It looks like all will be ok and I won't have to shoot the mother (yet.) I have been promised a dress in 4 weeks, it will be made and then air-mailed. I have a dress maker lined up for alterations, and we're full steam ahead again. Woohoo
#37
great news, good luck with the rest of the preparations. :)
