wedding reception advice..

The place I am wanting my evening wedding reception will not let me have my own caterers to do the buffet. I am not happy paying 1.6k for buffet food!! this doesnt even include wine! I have 2 options...
Some people have said dont mess about, just to have it there and be done with it. ( gulp that idea isnt settling too well)
OR
Ive looked into a new venue, which isnt as nice, but still good and I can get all the food and toast wine done for 400quid. This is a massive difference. This option would mean more work for me but look at the saving..

I am so torn... as I would like a stressish free ALL done for me wedding reception but im REALLY not comfortable paying that kind of money for a buffet!!
Yeah its my wedding which we're paying for everyone else to eat, so easy for those to make comments cos they are not paying....

Im not being mean am i? I think im being practical... wedding or not, im entitled to be counting the pennys!

My family thinks we should do food ourselves all chipping in to save money, but OHs family said its too much hassle and to let them do food....

I can see me not having a blooming reception at this rate! and running to gretna green! lol

It's your big day, therefore you should have what you want.........at the end of the day it's about you and your happiness, not anyone else ! Not much help, just my opinion x
#2
where about are u?
#3
YOU ARE IN CHARGE. So do whatever suits you best, sure there may be a bit more hassle involved in doing some of the work yourself, but it will also be an opportunity for people to rally round and help each other. Use the save money for something more useful I have heard that a credit crunch is on the way so every penny will count.
Good Luck :)

your big day!! If you want to save the pennies then save the pennies!!! Congrats when the time comes btw x

HIYA,

i will pm you details... dnt want any hukd gate crashers hahahahah ;)

I think that cost is obscene. I would go for the cheaper option. Even tittyvating it up to your own liking would be nowhere near the original cost.
#9
yer, my sis even said... look with asda and icelands party food we can buy all that for freezer and its all done at fraction of the cost... so i added it all up doing it that way and it was 300 quid...
#10
holy.....i wont even be paying £400 when our day comes (im really tight lol). how many people are you feeding?

After 5 yrs being together I think i am a better judge of that thanks.

That is an awful lot of money for a buffet but it is YOUR big day.

If you are happy organising it yourself then I would say go ahead and do that but make sure you ask everyone whether they are willing to help before you decide as you don't want the stress of trying to do most of it yourself - delegate as much as you can. I am sure people will be more than happy to help

whoaa!! lol. i got 9 people to invite on my side. i have a lot of family in wales, but i dont bother with them so no invites there. Maybe 40-50 very max invites her side, so if full turnout around 60 for us. Even that worries me. i just want a small simple affair.

Thats what Id love. Id be happy with just me and him! lol

Im not inviting people who i dont want there,or people i dont see from one year to the next.
Its madness people paying for family who they dont hardly see.

:whistling: wonder how gretna green will be looking in May ;-)

my friends are paying approx 19k for their wedding!!!!!
the catering issue me thinks is one you will have to live with for now ,at the moment in yorkshire to get a decent venue is an 18 month wait unless you can have your wedding at short notice
i would re look at the menu and cut it back to so that it is good plentyfull but not expensive.the wine ask if you can pay corkage on it and then go to one of the supermarkets and buy buy buy there are some great deals on this site
asdas 3 for a tenner the wine is brilliant, penfolds, hardys ,etc just get all the family to go and buy their max amount this will save a fortune also remember to check that the Vat is being reduced
but it is your day it is and will be special dont let £££ ruin it and stress you out
Good luck

Friends of ours paid over £20k for their wedding and 3 years later they're living apart!!
I don't think spending heaps of money makes for a better time or life so I'd rather keep the costs down and have more money to spend later enjoying each others company. What ever you do - enjoy yourself! All the best.
#25
We had a similar decision to make when we got married, we went with the cheaper option as it was more flexible although the other building was stunning!
I don't think it made any difference to the overall day for us, alot of people commented on how lovely the whole day was and we enjoyed so if you like the cheaper venue then i would go with that.
Wedding planning is supposed to be exciting not stressful, good luck with it all.
#26
Thanks everyone, I think I will go with the cheaper option....l guess i need to make space in my freezer!!
#27
We did lots of things for our wedding and everyone else really liked the personal touches and it was great fun too!

£1600 for a buffet is a lot of money but it depends on how much you like the place. This is your big day and as long as you can enjoy it as much somewhere else then that's fine. If you think you will look back on it and regret not splashing out so you could have the venue then grit your teeth and pay the extra.

Are they saying you have to pay a set amount per person? We had 150 to our reception but our venue said we'd only need to buy food for 100 and they were right, it was loads.

What about all the tables, linen, decorations, cutlery, crockery etc?? People to set out and serve a bit?
£8 a head is pretty reasonable, although obviously it stacks up the more you invite.
Are you really contemplating catering for 200 people on your wediing day yourself with a bit of help?
Madness I would say Ms Nutta.:w00t: Get the funds from all the relatives and enjoy the day as you should.

Do things like the colour schemed table decs yourself!!

heheh I would love it to be 8 quid a head.... its 15ish maybe 17quid a head for the buffet... Well just under really. Weve been juggling about with numbers etc but today we decided to cut back on numbers and opt for the medium buffet which would save us alot.

Oooo, that's a lot!! I just divided £1600 by 200:oops:
Your latest decision seems on the mark.
Even so, as you probably don't need anything in the way of actual physical presents, why not ask people to contribute to the catering costs instead??
Whatever you decide, it's going to be a super day I'm sure.
Looking forwards to the pics already.:-D
