What Broadband Provider? Help pretty please........!

Hello, im moving into a student house in guildford at the end of the month and we're just wondering about the broadband.

Ever so confusing with limits, fair usage policies and line rentals- i'd guess we'd need home phone too, ahhhh

I think we'd go with virgin if it wasnt for the fact that theyre apparently clamping down on people downloading things which is bound to happen in a house on 6...

any one in the same boat? any help?

thanks

well id reccomend BT but thats only cos i work for them,

seeing as there is 6 of you if its available go for fibre optic virgin, the more of you on it at the same time the slower its gonna be, so its worth splashing out so you each get at least 5MBPS each.

I used to be in student housing in guildford, go for virgin they used to be NTL, great service and most houses have fibre to the door. Don't go for quidco or into a branch phone up the direct sales line and say you are a student in guildord and ask for a 9month contract. If they say no mention other providers will do it they should too. IF you get a big fat NO, go via a hight street store or quidco.

Before you phone talk to your housemates and decide on a total budget based upon:

Just BB,
BB and free calls
BB, calls and basic tv.

Whatever happens make sure you ask about a wireless router, is it free etc?

Quidco = http://www.quidco.com/bethere-co-uk/

Plus they got an offer on the 8meg package for £8 a month till end of the year.
Or you could try o2 who own Be* and run on the same equipment etc but I think it can work out cheaper if you already have a contract mobile from o2 for example.

Unlimited bandwidth, no training etc, and so far they haven't signed up with any anti-piracy organisations.

If it were me though, I would go with Virgin and just use newsgroups, an encrypted one.

thats no good to them, if they have 6 comps on at the same time that UP TO 8 mbps has to be split between them, thats gonna leave them with a really slow connection

All I did was mention the the offer, they can get up to 24mb with Be* on the more expensive package. Although it does depend on your distance from the exchange like with all ADSL connections.

i wasnt having a pop mate lol, the 24mbps would be sufficient for 6 pcs. maybe thats the way to go

thanks for the info, having looked at the virgin deal the tv channels are pretty much the same as freeview and i cant imagine the line rental from bt is going to be far worse then virgin. i think £8 line rental £8+ish for BB sounds good if we can still download bits... if im wrong please tell me

What do you do for BT? I know of llarge companies that run 10+ pcs that run on a upto 8 meg circuit. Be (as is any ADSl2+) is a good suggestion as they have upto 1.3Meg upload speeds.
