What Broadband service have you got? Virgin have "capped" my usage!!! WTF!??

Was using my puter today, and I noticed that it was running quite slow. So I done a few speed tests on it, and Virgin have "capped" my speed down to a quarter.
I called them up, and the guy basically told me that they had capped it, and to try and not use it for 4-5 hours, as I was putting a load on the server, along with other people who may be using their broadband service...
I am on the L - Large broadband service 10mb, and speed is down at less than 2.5KBs.
Are they allowed to do this? I didn't think it was a "fair usage" policy. I thought it was "unlimited" that meant unlimited???
Who do you use, how much does it cost you, what is your speed, and it is capped?

Yep thats what they do. However it is the only one that is truly **unlimited**, other service providers will probably just cut you off.

Tomorrow morning it will be back upto full speed.

If you download loads why don't you leave it running at night? I leave my NC10 downloading at night as it takes far less power and not as noisy as my PC.

Read about it here... http://www.virginmedia.com/help/traffic-management.php

This is virgin's traffic management policy in action! People don't like it but all you need to do is make sure you're downloading all that por... err, all those files during off peak times! ;)

But saying this, if your speed doesn't recover after the 5 hours then you've got a case to start moaning at them. I'm with VM and have had this once or twice. Annoying but there are no limits to what you can download.

Booooo. I thought I read somewhere that there is someone who offers "truly" unlimited...Is it Sky?
How are you getting on with your NC10? What programmes have you installed, and what mods have you done, if any? Mine is still "like a virgin". I haven't even taken the plastic off of it yet! :w00t:

I have orange and I download outside of peak period from 12am till 6 pm. in the last 3 days, i downloaded at least 100GB. I do this a lot. as long as its outside of peak period, its fine.

Be are also really unlimited. Been using them for over a year. We have the 8 gig service and get 8.5 24/7...

Can't recommend O2 Broadband highly enough. If you have an O2 mobile contract or PAYG - you get a $5pm discount making it only £7.34pm for 8Mb down and 1.3Mb up.

Mostly using openSUSE 11.1, so not using much of windows except when I absolutely must.

Need to buy a case for it from DX the 10" one does not fit, only the smaller one - and just about fits nice and tight, bought one but only for one NC10 not the other one.

Reallly need a tiny mouse, the mouse pad really slows me down......

I need a BT landline for BE and O2. Is there a way of getting this cheap? Again, I'm sure I read something on here that said that you got it cheap if you ..........? Can't remember, as I think it is over £100 usually.

Yeah Sky were the first service provider to offer truly unlimited broadband, it was on the gadget show ages ago.

Exactly the same thing happened to me as you. We use BT Business Broadband because we have a business line. We live out in the country a bit but were once getting near 8mb now it is permanently capped at 2mb with no warning nothing and sometimes even goes down to 192kb for some reason.
