What can I do with a PS2 if the cd player/laser is broken?

I was given a PS2 (scph-35002) but it turns out the cd player/laser is broken. I tried cleaning it etc but I reckon it's a dead duck in that direction.

I was given a few games with it but no memory card.

I read somewhere that games can be placed on a usb hdd, but is it worth the effort if the cd player/laser is broken? Any thoughts/advice (btw, I am not looking to pirate games - just trying to make use of what I have)
Thanks

Throw it away and get with the times?

Also if you don't want to pirate the games then how do you expect to get them onto the HDD with them being the original game?

You could parcel it up and send it to a nigerian scammer, (without paying the postage of course) Would be nice to scam them for once

Use Freemcboot and either USBadvance or openps2load to boot games from a usb HDD/flash drive

Wind your neck in...I already have a PS3, Xbox360 and an iphone...the question was about what could I do with a PS2 with a broken cd player/laser, not about me moving with the times! And, if you really must know, the PS2 came with original games and was destined for the kids in their playhouse, so who said anything about pirating games - they are called back-ups when played from an external usb hdd.

I have a launch ps2, do I just have to get the ps2 network adapter?

Yeah with mine I installed the memory card software and the hard drive boot software(for the ethernet adaptor) I didnt need the dvd drive to play games.

Only issue is that some drives larger than 250 gig arent recognised easily and you need an old fashioned IDE drive not a sata without doing some clever electronics wiring.
