What can I do with my fireplace!?

I have a rather large inglenook style fireplace and it's rather empty at the moment. the space measures 5ft5" high by 5ft4" wide and it's 2ft deep. at the moment all I have in there is a few candles and a bowl of pot puri. I'd love to make it a better feature and did want a stove style fire. However most are too small for the space and would look lost. I enquired a couple of years ago and was told I could order one specially to fit but that I would be looking at about a thousand pounds!!!
Has anyone got any ideas or suggestions? There is a gas supply and an electric supply. at the moment it is bordered up with MDF but I was told when I moved in here ( 6yrs ago) that the chimney was fully working and ready just to open up.

My place was built in 1901 and I have high ceilings and reasonably large rooms as well - apparently this is an original feature.

lol that would give my cat a field day. Idealy I'm after some sort of fire - I don't need it, I just want it as I think the room would look better.

If anyone else has something similar I'd love to see what you have as well. When I tell people it's an inglenook style fireplace they kinda go "what?"

Or how about a nice big fire basket, cheap as chips and you shouldn't need anything else other than a poker and some fuel :-D

My mum always tells me an open fire would look nice. Would it be safe? I mean no ash would be jumping out onto the carpet would it?

Yes safe, looks like your big hole has had a real fire in it previously. My fire has a £300 deep shaggy pile wool rug in front of it, which I would reccomend over a synthetic material as if anything hot is spat out then it won't melt the rug. Wool is very resilient to hot embers. The cat stays clear of it, loves the heat tho' :-D

I think it might have done looking at the shading of the bricks. I can feel a raised concrete hearth under the carpet but have never lifted it to check. Carpets were new when I moved in and haven't needed replacing yet. It would be more for show than anything as I don't really need it for the heat but all the same I'd worry about the carpet and cat lol - mind you she does not bother with candles so I doubt she would go near an open flame.
