Corsa is obviously a little bit more expensive

Corsa

neither, a first car should be a cheap, battered little runner, that can be easily fixed by yourself

but given a choice the sxi.

The Corsa, it looks like it is standard, so will not be subject to increased premiums (and less insurers actually quoting you) than the 106 which looks like it has been lowered and the alloys are not standard. I'm also assuming the 106 is a 1.4 and Corsa a 1.2 so Corsa will be a little slower but cheaper to insure.

The 106 is also not as good quality as the Corsa (although I'm not saying Corsa's are great) but more is likely to go wrong with the 106

I'll add to this actually to back myself up - I've had a Corsa 1.2 SXI+ for the past 4 years, owned since new, it had it's MOT today, and only failed on a £1.17 clip on the CV boot, which was quickly fixed for free my the garage. The onyl other money I have had to spend on it is for windscreen wipers and tyres, along with the usual services. It has not had to have anything more than that done to it - Not even the tracking as this has been spot on evertime it has been checked!

My friend had a 106, bought it new, when it was 3 1/2 yrs old the welds on the door hinges started to go, eventually resulting in the pasenger door dropping off from one hinge - Pug wanted nothing to do with it and he had to pay for it to be re-welded, also he had the elec windows go, exhaust go and the clutch go in the 4 yrs he owned it.

WOW seems to be unanimous...

I had some quotes and the insurance cost was the same for both.

its like a golf.......................... cracking car !

deffo the 106 quicksilver. They are quick for a 1.4 decent on the motorway for a small car, However they are a tin can on wheels, not very good safety rating but it looks & drives so much better than the corsa, i know which i'd be chosing.
I had a 106 1.6 gti & it was rapid, because there was nothing too it - a really light car, loved it was a little go-cart

I've heard peugeot's to be very unreliable though

but its a first car, surely you dont want it to be rapid  or perhaps that was just me, i was just happy to have my 1st car get me from a-b safely & cheaply. not that im suggesting the op or all 1st time drivers are speed freaks.

Did you declare the modifications to the Pug though? Remember if you modify your car and dont decalre it your insurance can be invalid!

But the Corsa? Its still a .......Corsa!

Mine was really good, had it for 2yrs & nothing wrong with it. If it's got a good history & service record. A friend had the quicksilver & loved it for his first car. The pic looks like a boy-racered one so have a good look over it if you buy it. I'd be going for an untouched FSH one.
I never wanted a french car, but don't regret it.
However my supposedly 'reliable' vw has been a nightmare cost me £££thousands!
#21
I'd say the Corsa, although I do have a soft spot for the 106...But the Corsa should be superior in every way, the 106 is VERY old tech...
#22
The Peugeot has probably had a hard life to day:
- it is advertised on pistonheads
- it has been lowered and a bit modified - not what a usual 'careful lady owner' would do, so my guess it has taken some beating in its life so far. I'd stay clear

In all honesty I also wouldn't touch the Corsa wearing gloves, but that is just personal taste ;)
Have you looked at Fiestas?

Nice pictures up there, my first car was a Golf Mk1, 1979, that brings back memories...

Corsa's a horrible colour, but the Pug's got (stupid) alloys (so God knows what else the owner has done to it, which is why you should avoid it). Are you sure you want one of these 2?
#24
Corsa, as I wouldn't recommend anything french for a first car.
#25
The quicksilver is quite quick and good handling but avoid any modded cars as a general rule. After all they are usually modded by petrol heads who like to take them out to car park meets and drag race them up dual carriage ways and donut them in car parks...Not worth the risk.

Yeah i'm leaning more towards the corsa and that's the exact colour i want it.

There's one down the road from me and it looks great in that colour!
#27
Pug no contest Imo, my first car was a 1.0 106 would of given my right arm for that back then.
I had mine for 2 years and never had a problem with it, virtually all my aunties have pugs and never have any trouble either I wouldn't worry about reliability.

One final note. If you're into the modding scene yourself, don't dismiss the Corsa cause theres loads you can do to it if you're into that sort of thing! They're both decent cars (I've driven both) but the Corsa is the safer bet (But the 106 better handling).

Only mods i'd be getting done are lowering it slightly and getting a set of tidy black alloys on there.

I suspect the corsa to be a smoother ride aswell ?

Also remember op the peugot looks modified so insuring that is gonna cost more than the corsa as you gotta declare mods.
