We are going to see a Nissan Micra 1.2 sport today. It has mileage of 50k and is £1000 under book price. The chap selling it has a foreign accent and says he is a Doctor working in cardiff but from London. He says he has all the paperwork and MOT/service records

We are a bit wary as he is selling another one but 6 months younger and a spirita model for the same price but this one is HALF the book price!

Has anyone come across this before and it all turned out to be genuine or does it sound suspicious to you?

He has given us his home address and we have decided if all paperwork seems to be in order we will then pay £50 deposit and get all the HPI check done.

Is there anything else we can do?

Thanks in advance!!

1st alarming point is -- address on 1---the log book will not be where u are going to see the car take a note of name and address on log book and try to locate them via directory enquiries.

2- could be a dealer merely covering tracks re the address-- pretend u have interest in both cars. Check addresses on both registration docs. Are they different?????

3- ask him for I'd if hrs a doctor will have photo I'd. Tell him u have been duped before

4- hpi it 1at and foremost will cost u £10 max with mycarcheck online

5- if he is a doctor he should undestand your wariness if he gets shirty u will know to avoid.

Sometimes things are too good to be true with regards to hpi. The car could be accident damaged but not been registered. So look out for paintwork difference , gaps at doors are same both sides

Suggest that u call him and say u may be interested in both the cars. Tell h u need registration numbers because u want to get insurance quote and your company is asking for reg number!!!!

Better being £20 down than £1000s

if car defo for you pay him a £100 deposit by cheque and say u will return on wednesday then u can do all the checks u want. Then if still not happy call your bank and cancel cheque

How old is this car. And price he is after. ?? Is it in a local paper, website , autotrader. It's all relevant.

Selling 2 cars. Both serviced in same garage ??? Look at service book dates etc. May have a friend with garage easiest thing to get it a history book stamped

If you know the Reg No. I can do a quick check for you on the 'MIAFTR' Insurance Database - will only tell if the car has been classified as an Insurance Write Off previously. Could still have sustained accident damaged and repaired but not recorded as not sufficient to be classed a Total Insurance Loss. At least it might save you a wasted journey. If it comes back clear when I carry out the check I would still advise you get a full HPI Report to ensure it has no Outstanding Finance.

If you use the MOT link provided by 'csiman' you should be able to tell if the vehicle has been clocked - also useful to establish if the car had any advisories noted at its last MOT which would indicate likely expense in the near future to rectify. (You will need the Reg No. and either current MOT Cert. No or V5 Doc Ref. No to carry out the full MOT history check but the seller should have no issue in supplying this info if they are genuine).

Just an update. Went to see car.....well you couldn't make it up! The alloys were totally scratched and I mean huge gouges here! The car has been resprayed and fillered on the right side, the door interior was hanging off, the boot was wobbling back and fore and when we took it for a test drive the spring had totally gone so the noise the car was making was unbelieveable. To top it off every side of the car had a dent in it and deep scratches.
