What do i do...

Ok was re-installing windows the other day, but had lost my Xp CD. I read that often the image is burnt onto the hardrive. I checked and it was! I started the process all going fine, but after it had deleted the old operating system, it asked me to the insert the CD - Which I don't have!!!

Is there anyway out of this without having to call Dell and what god knows long till/if they send me a new cd!

HELP

Erm, have you not got the stuff you got from Dell? Should be something with 'if you need to re-install Windows...'
#2
I have got loads of the CDs, drivers, software etc - But nothing but the XP manual! My mate has offered me to use his XP Pro disc. Can anything be done with it?
#3
You should be able to use the XP pro disc and enter your product key...I take it you are running PRO not HOME?
#4
Ah sorry shoulda said, I WAS running home
#5
You'll need a HOME disc then...but I'm not sure it works as I've only tried it with PRO.

contact Dell and tell them your predicament and that you need a backup cd for windows XP home. Do you have a COA on the back of your computer for XP home?

failing that I have a spare dell backup windows xp home CD - assuming your laptop is dell? i can post it to you pretty pronto if you need it soon.

*UPDATE* Just stuck a legit copy of xp pro in, it loaded it all but then came up with "file\i386\halaacpi.dll could not be loaded. the error code is 32768
set up cannot continue" which happened on my mates version of xp home.

Have Dell stuck a componant on their computer that only allows Dell cds to run?

I don't know to be honest. Why don't you phone dell their customer service is actually quite good these days, they'll probably be able to help you out - or at least explain why the xp cd isn't installing.

It would have to be the same model number or all the drivers would not be on the disk.

No, there is a separate drivers disc, however drivers can be downloaded from the dell website. WinXP discs contain a whole host of generic drivers, but not the drivers specific to dell laptops. So any dell backup winXP disc will work, I think.
