router, I am not technical but its very easy to set up

The 'n' & 'g' refer to the technology (i.e. firmware) within the router. Any router will work (provided it offers wireless).

but what kind of a router an n router or g router ? and whats the difference ?

I doubt going wireless is going to solve your problem.

if you get your connection down a phone line you need a modem router ask tiscali if they have any deals on modem routers, as your laptop is fairly new it should have wireless built in, this means you can link it to your modem router without a usb wireless adapter

I think the N and G are the speed they will download at.

Think there is a G+ too.

Sounds like you have either line problems or connection problems from your ISP.

First step would be to get your line checked.

Phone BT.

802.11n and 802.11g they both should fall back to 802.11b which is still used by lots of devices

g is 54Mbps

n can be 300Mbps

Wireless built in to laptops is starting to be 'n' (becoming more common) the rest are 'g' or 'b'

Usb dongles are starting to be 'n' (becoming common) the rest are generally 'g'

n is faster and greater coverage in theory

You need to buy a DSL/modem/ router if you get your internet over phone)

Tiscali is probably the reason your having trouble they are terrible that or the BT line those are mainly terrible as well so if those are the reasons for the drop outs then new equpipment will not make it any better .

in fact potentially more problems :)

for the first step turn off you modem for about 5-10 min (30 minutes to be sure) and then turn it back on. If the problem still persists, contact your ISP

Thanks for all the help , My laptop does have a built in wifi , Im sure the tiscalli connection is fine because im using my home pc and it never cuts me off the internet , its only when i use my laptop that it happens , as i use different modems for my pc and laptop i was sure its the modem on the laptop that has gone, could be wrong im no tec lol

ps , here's what keeps happening , i plug in my usb modem and then turn on my laptop , everything is fine so far so i connect to the web , no problems its connects straight away then 5/10 mins im suddenly cut off the web and it wont let me reconnect ,it keeps saying the modem is already in use by a different program or theres a fault in the modem , if a switch off my laptop and restart it , it will let me reconnect to the web but then again 5/10mins later max it cuts me off again

so you are using a
- wired modem for your pc (connected via the lan port or slow usb port)
- a usb broadband dongle (e.g. O2, vodafone etc) - this is causing problems

what you need then is replace the modem with a wireless modem router and bin the dongle as that seems to be the problem. As your laptop is wireless the only expense would be for the wireless modem router.

no dongle , im using wired 2 modems , 1 for my pc , 1for my laptop

You realise you can't use two seperate modems at once? So you can't use one modem with your pc and one with your laptop both at the same time.

lol yes i know that

Firstly going wireless will not help unless you go through orange, tmobile etc,

tiscali are shocking so that could be the problem ,

ONLY CERTAIN ROUTERS WORK WITH TISCALI so check it is compatable

Are you sure it is the router ,do the lights go off on the router if not might be the pc that is faulty or the wired connection

when you pick up your telephone listen and if you hear noise in the background on the line intermittantly then that will be why the router is disconnecting you from the internet, the problem is when they check your line they will say all is ok as the on line tests do not pick up intermittant noise , ask them to do a figure of 8 test for 1 hrs as you can hear noise.

If no noise and the lights go off on the router i would contact tiscali and tell them the router is faulty and ask for a replacement, these should be free
