They go to 5.9. They might go higher with Vista SP2, but for the time being, 5.9's the highest you can get.

The number is meant to be an alternative to minimum specs, so whereas before you'd get minimum & recommneded CPU, RAM, GPU and the like, you now just get a single baseline number. It's a good thing, I suppose, since it simplifies matters. But barey any software uses the Vista system rating in the system requirements, so it's jsut like a primative and not-very-useful benchmark app which you can safely ignore.

the fact the vista system uses the 'lowest common denominator' rule is a bit rubbish too. my system gets between 5.5 and 5.9 for all but graphics as I have an onboard chip. Because of that I get a 3.5 overall but I know its just games and 3D it'll struggle to do - neither of which I use the laptop for, making their rating irrelevant.

Given the operating system uses a graphics hardware accelerated interface it makes a lot of sense to mark systems down overall for integrated graphics.

actually i was understanding that it was 10.....but have limited to 6 until hardware becomes more capable.

i'm pretty sure it goes upto 6.0

my PC is at 5.7
everything is 5.9 exept the CPU (E8400 3.0GHz)

my grafix rated at 5.9 but basic is is rated at 5.3 because of the hard drive and processer ther rest AT 5.9

how much extra graphics's capability does Aero actually need? My laptop absolutely flies with all the fancy bits turned on and was happily running dreamweaver, photoshop, firefox, IE and burning a CD in nero all at the same time last night with no noticeable slowdown.

The only downside to onboard that I can see, when you're not gaming, is shared memory, but I've not experienced any issues as yet.
