Collecting is one of the most interesting and complex aspects of consumer behaviour.

In a society that promotes rational behaviour, self control and the idea of progress and completeness, yet also denies many these things, collecting is a behaviour through which individuals may achieve a sense of progress (through visibly growing, better, or more valuable collections) and control (through the selection, indexing and display of items collected). In a society where desire is achieved though the fetishism of commodities collecting also allows for the experience of desire. Collectors may always direct desire towards the next item, especially the rare and 'almost' unobtainable. And the anthropology of consumption suggests that collecting is also a way to mark and materialise events through commodities. For example the collector will add to their collection during a holiday or special trip, and via birthdays and Christmas. They may come to know and describe their collections according to when and where they got items and/or who game them.

Just so you know :)

I collect well nothing really apart from Pearson's pottery of which most is kept in the loft at the minute as its tipped to be a collectible of the future, at the minute its only a couple of quid a piece or thereabouts so really cheap, it also has the local connection for me as it was a Chesterfield pottery while they was running. The bits I do use are mainlt the Tea, coffee and sugar sets, salt and pepper sets the stuff you use every day!

I don't really collect anything anymore but at 1 time I was always buying nail polish and had over 100 bottles at one time.A lot of it I picked up as a teenager on boot fairs, you know half a bottle here and there for 20p etc.
Now I cringe to think I could possibly picked up someones fungal nail infection or something.
These days I've probably got about 15 bottles.
I used to collect metal badges as a kid, think my Mum still got them, must be over 1000,really should get them and sell them on eBay.I also at one time collected Treasures of the Earth, they cost my parents a fortune, and we eventually stopped buying them. We called up publishers asking how many more issues and they be like this many, and then it always get extended so we throwed the towel in on them.
I've got a lot of stuff overall but nothing in particular that I collect,i'm not a big fan of ornaments either.
