Is it cheaper to boil water on gas or electricity? I'm thinking of a kettle. Though it takes slightly longer to boil water on gas, does it work out cheaper in the long run?

Think i was told the other way round.
When i cook pasta, i turn the hob on but i boil the kettle for the water and hwen it's boiled, pour it into the pan.

i would say electric kettle, although leccy is dearer than gas, only way to find it is stick same amount in kettle and same amount is small pan with lid on, bet gas takes twice as long

I always thought boiling the kettle was one of the most expensive things to do.

It's the economy side of things I'm thinking off. Though gas would take longer, the kettle could sit there while I did other things.

TBH, I'm trying to preempt another huge electricity bill this winter by all means possible:)

take it you done the norm, checked for cheaper tariffs, making sure you only boil what you need, im a toad for flicking kettle on then forgetting to make a coffee so flicking it back on half hour later

my leecys bills work out about 300 per year, and as said in other thread, i tumble dry everything, hot the usual things like fridge, freezer, leccy shower, etc,etc although my heating is gas

A kettle has a power rating of 2kW, so if it takes 5 minutes to boil the kettle then it uses 0.25kWh. If you have a gas hob and use the burner that is rated at 3kW (I think ours are 3kW, 2 x 4kW and 5kW) and it takes 10 minutes to boil an identical amount of water then it uses 0.45kWh. So with electricity at 12p per kWh that is 3p to boil the kettle, if you use the gas which is 6p per kWh then that works out at 3p to boil a pan of water.

Or something like that........................

Only way to check is meter reading usage for the gas I suppose. [you can calculate the leccy]

Compare the 2.

use the kettle - but make a flask of tea each time thus saving the amount of times you have to boil the kettle

According to EON this is the cost per hour unless otherwise stated :

Electric cooker ring 30p

Electric cooker oven 33p

Gas cooker ring 9p

Gas cooker oven 18p

Microwave 1p for 5mins

Kettle 2p a boil

I don't think it matters too much with newer energy efficient kettles but I know in the past it has been reported kettles and tumble dryers are the biggest energy wasters in the home - I use the hob btw!

I don't think little things like that are really going to make any difference.

Larger items such as
Tumble Drier
Washing MC
Dishwasher
Immersion Heater
Central heating [pump]
Lighting
Freezer
Electric heating far outweigh all the smaller things.

I have one of those electricity monitors and have noticed that the electric kettle makes the indicator go up dramatically. I've turned the monitor off because it was bothering me so much:) I might start boiling water in a billycan outside.:)

All I need now is a coolibah and a billabong.

Once a jolly swagman camped by a billabong
Under the shade of a coolibah tree,
And he sang as he watched and waited 'til his billy boiled
"You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me"

I only fill the kettle to minimum amount for coffee, but I fill it to boil the water before cooking potatoes etc on the gas hob cos my new gas hob takes ages to boil.

What makes me crazy is the kids leave fans on in their rooms even when they're at school.

They leave their comps open and running.

My son has so many tv screens/carp running in his room at all once the room literally *hums* and he goes nutserooni if I touch anything...

The house is constantly turned on and alive so I doubt if I can make these reductions.

and yes, I've done told em a million times!!

Just flip the breaker to the upstairs sockets when they leave. Tell them you will do it and they will soon save anything that needs saving.

I've occasionally done that if they go way past the " it's bedtime" point... My lovely eldest is kinda old for me to be laying down the law though lol

But ... so it wouldnt damage the hardware thats on up there?

If not i'll do it.

My quarterly electric bill is usually £200, we have just switched to a gas cooker so am waiting to see if the change makes a noticeable difference to either bill. I have always boiled the water for cooking in the kettle first, to save time. I have recently started making a flask of coffee for the day to save boiling the kettle regularly.

I tried switching to new appliances last year to bring down the cost and didnt really notice any difference either.

I dont dare bust it, he built it himself and I know it costs thousands for the parts. Woulda been much easier to just buy it but he wanted his " dream machine" . He's an IT bore.

We have an electric cooker, and always used to boil the kettle whilst the hob was heating up to cook pasta... anyway so one time I tested the difference and put cold water in the pan on the hob, and put another hob on for when the kettle boiled. When the kettle boiled I added it to a pan and put on the other hob that had been heating up..... and both pans of water still boiled at around the same time a minute or so later. So in our house anyway it makes no difference to boil the kettle first, so now I just boil the water on the hob.... I know the above could be down to our cooker not being very good maybe, but kind of makes sense if you think about it.
