What do you think about *Trolling*?

Do you think trolling on the internet is freedom of speech, should it be illegal (could it be enforced) and/or is there a line to be drawn and if so at what point?

:w00t:

Depends on the topic/forum.

I agree some of the stuff is just a bit of fun but some people get hurt far to easy by what others say on the internet.
#13
when you sign up to a forum, you agree to the t&c's so therefore have no freedom of speech.

If you don't like trolls, don't feed them.

Do we have to be serious? Fair enough just for a sec...

Meh, trolling here is generally playing games with people and other silly folk getting upset. The trolling on the linked videos, once you remove the stand US TV bullshine, are pretty shocking.

Having that said, this is from the country who let protesters do their anti war crap at the funerals of killed soldiers.

the ones on the video are kinda dead, so its kinda hard to have much effect.

There is a level at which it is not harmless banter about a video game or for lols and goes beyond that. The weird, and sometimes disturbingly sinister, world of 4chan and 2chan can mean trolling is not trivial, it becomes a dark side of the internet which is overlooked. Those who are particularly sensitive or have mental problems will be affected a lot more. Anonymity can turn those, who are already messed up, into characters who want to ridicule and ruin someone else and it can have some very grave consequences. It can affect society as well, not just people killing themselves, there was a case in japan where the guy went round stabbing people.

I know 'it's the internets - chillax' but people should be more responsible - what goes on forums such as these is nothing compared to what's out there and people may need the fear of punishment to think twice about what they are doing. Free speech is never absolute, bullying and harassment should not be tolerated - irrespective of it being on cyberspace.

I thought they might mention the Nicole Catsouras thing. That was srsly brutal. The police decided the scene was so grotesque that they wouldn't show the body to the parents, but the photos got emailed by one of the police officers involved to one of his friends, and they got leaked from there onto Documenting Reality, and then Anon emailed the photos to the parents with various messages attached. The full story's over on DR. Bad times.

Personally, I think freedom of speech is a good thing and should be allowed at all times, but it needs the condition "But only if you're not being a complete **** to someone" appended to it.

Some people can't live without drama in their lives and thrive on it, it becomes an addiction, so if no one about then the internet may be their only access to it!

the anonymity plays a big part of it, people feel they can get away with it and think it is okay - even though it isn't

what electriclinux posted - that on its own isn't trolling and people will post all sorts of things, i can understand why people get upset but that's another discussion about poor taste / humour / freedom of expression

it's when you intend to cause distress to people and you do something what an ordinary person would think is unacceptable - there are varying levels and the more serious and dark side trolling may be considered, and sometimes is, unlawful behaviour

I got "introduced" to the likes of the original rotten.com a long time ago, and not a lot bothers me, but those pictures are horrific.

haha... tell a child not to touch that candle flame...

so my opinion on trolling FWIW: I think light hearted banter is fine and clever quips are actually entertaining and a bit of back and forth is actually fun. but i think trolling on misc has turned really nasty and goes too far now. I can just imagine a legion of depressed users looking for every opportunity to point out that someone is wrong, falling over themselves to post that obvious sarcastic comment, making notes to make that perfect comeback/put down etc.

In general i'm pretty bored of misc now, and it's not half as bad as other sites.

Innit, man. I think we're all guilty of it to some extent. I know I just about ****** myself laughing the time my spastic friend drunkenly bolted at full pelt into a bus stop, and I bet everyone does pretty much the same thing, but going to that level of aggression to upset someone, that's seriously bad stuff. Makes the internet seem like a hive of sociopaths at times.

I know what you mean. S'like, I read the thread about some hippy girl who took a bit of a smack from a policeman, and it was the exact same thread of the exact same agitators writing the exact same stuff to the exact same people again. It's total stagnation, and just the same old repressed grudges being wheeled out over and over.

It's kinda funny, in a way. I'd bet you any money, if these guys got together IRL, they'd be good mates. I base this on the fact that I've just spent the past 24 horus with a mate of mine with whom I share practically zero opinions, and who I've almost trolled to tears with utterly nonsensical (but at the same time, incontestable) arguments in favour of all sorts of evil ****. He might as well be illiterate with his standard of dyslexia, too. I'd probably hate him on here. Get on great IRL, though. I think what this place needs is a good forum pubcrawl. What you reckon, sound a plan?
