Went to use Windows Media Player this afternoon and it's not working. Worked fine this morning, have rebooted etc - nothing has changed on the system since this morning but when i try to open it (or a song) nothing happens. I have tried right clicking and selecting "Open with" but that doesn't work either. I have rolled it back to a previous version; uninstalled it and re-installed Version11 from Microsoft.com but still nothing.

So now I'm on the (quite urgent) lookout for a new media player - mainly songs, but the odd movie too. What would you recommend? (for free, i ain;t paying for jack!)

Try running WMP in safe mode. If it does work then there is something in your startup that is causing the issue.

An old version of Winamp 2.8, the new ones are very convoluted.
http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=winamp - I use it for MP3s and it is very quick and does exactly what I need it to do.
