See so many threads about consoles that have been soft modded, hard modded, are banned, ringed, chipped...what does all that mean?

Also, why would you need a particular game to soft mod a console?

In simple terms please cos I am a woman so am thick!!!

Chipped - you open the console and stick a chip on the circuit board to get the system to do things it shouldn't.

Soft Mod - You use a software exploit to do the stuff you would normally have needed to chip a console to do. In some instances it involves a specific game, on the original Xbox 'Splinter Cell' had the ability to run a special savegame that installed the software.

Banned - Most of the console manufacturers don't like people modding (modifying) them so 'ban' consoles from their respective online services if they detect they have been modified.

The reason people do it is because it allows you to run copied games and often homebrew (home made software). One of the most famous bits of homebrew was XBMC that allowed you to turn an old Xbox into a fully functioning media jukebox, it's actually still going on PC.

Most technology today has security Fern. Exploits, Viruses, Malware, etc and so on, are just a way of breaking down that security. Just like a Virus would break your computers security system to gain access to potentially private documents, an exploit on a console can break the security to allow you to play backup or pirated games.

Think of a cupboard full of chocolate locked down with a huge padlock. A hard mod would be taking a hammer to it, a softmod would be persuading whoever has the key to give it to you, and being banned would be what happens when your caught with chocolate on your face.

The reason why you would need a particular game to softmod a console, is just like why you would need a particular person to break into the chocolate cupboard. You want the person with the key, some games have a key (a vulnerability). You want to take advantage of it.

Hopefully that is simple enough hehe, time for Big Brother!

OP dont listen to them here it is explained.
soft mod = a hotukdeal moderator who will give you a warning b4 being banned
hard mod = a hotukdeal moderator who will give you no warning b4 being banned
banned = does it exactly what it says on the tin. banned from hotukdeals
chipped = cut up little bits, deep fried with some fish
red ring of death (rrod) = the morning after the night before after umpteen beverages and a vindaloo

Thank you so much for that!!! So easy to understand.

Why would people then buy RROD consoles? Surely they don't work anymore?

RROD is an XBOX 360 term. It means it's not working, and has a major fault.
The corresponding fault on a PS3 is YLOD(Yellow light of death).

They both can be fixed. It's like a car with a blown engine, or as a woman, think about a kettle with a blown element.
They can be fixed by someone with the right knowledge/time, or salvaged for parts.
For most people, they simply aren't worth the time.

No, it's not all illegal. It's what people do with "modded" consoles that is generally against the law.

No-ish

For the most part you can do whatever you like to a console you own. The console manufacturers try to get around this by making some of the stuff you need to do the mods illegal to sell in the UK, most recently the court case that banned the sale of DS R4 cards.

Softmods though are usually done with nothing but a normal memory card and bit of software and in some cases doesn't even void the warranty. With this it only gets into hazy legal territory if you are downloading copies of games or making copies of games you don't own.
