What does Sheffield City Centre need?

I'm doing a pitch next week for my degree, and i need to outline a possible new business venture in Sheffield, and i was hoping you kind HUKDers could help me in coming up with an idea.

So what does Sheffield City Centre need?

if you work / live in / visit Sheffield, what is missing from the city centre? what type of store or service would you like to see there that you have to go elsewhere for?

Thanks to anyone who takes the time to respond

Moor area needs major redevelopment as is now very out of date and looks scruffy,Main City Centre are trying to become more of a Leisure destination due to winter gardens etc and is let down by this.

Needs more family friendly attractions in city centre(decent cinema etc) and the big wheel is crap tbh...most people just go to Don Valley, also more cheap parking is required as is expensive

Division St area has become more mainstream as used to be more independent shops however now has a bloody Starbucks and Greggs on there, that needs to be brought back as there is a good market for something there.

City Centre is missing a high end Luxury Spa and if I had the cash this is what I would invest in or a cycling/adventure trip company to take people out into Peak District.

so if i'm reading this right, it needs demolishing, blown up, less inbreds, a better football team, to be Leeds (which goes against the previous two comments) and a high end spa.

thanks boothy, would you mind expanding on what you meant by family friendly attractions? as there are already a few cinemas in the city centre, odeon, showroom etc..

Cinema wise the Odeon is a proper dump and the Showroom shows independent films on the whole so generally your serious film going crowd for that one.

You need a big swish multiplex type thing which will help local restaurants, bars and suchlike(if you build it they will come:)) particularly in the week when you only get the student crowd in the City Centre(which is why I tend to avoid)......take some of the people away from Meadowhall which is what caused the problems in the first place.

The biggest problem with Sheffield city centre is geographic, it is spread over a long thin strip from Castlegate through High Street to Fargate and then The Moor, it needs to be more centralised.

The bit that needs the most renovation at this moment though is the Castlegate/Waingate market area, it's a complete dump.

I don't think you can move it though. I think the south would object too:whistling:

Why would Yorkshire people want to go down to that overpriced crap hole anyway? :?

Good job mods, when will soapy learn?

I think i should be more specific,

i need to pitch a specific business, for example a DIY store, a bed and breakfast or a Chinese restaurant, (god knows we have enough of those) or a local service, thinking on a much smaller scale than your ideas (esp. nuking it.)

Perhaps not exactly what you were after but easy to access (i.e. easy to get to and near popular stores) and cheap car parking would make a good business in the city centre.

Correct, you can't put a price on NOT living down south - it's priceless :whistling:

The moor needs completely demolishing, and the nearly-reasonable older area of shopping needs expanding.

The tram system is fantastic, but could be used more effectively to extend the city centre facilities.

Its not all that bad, but the moor needs sorted ASAP.

PS: The troll who mentioned Leeds is of course - a troll, but just to make it clear, I don't live in Sheffield or Leeds, but Leeds is a huge sprawling dump. Its a disgusting dank place, and I'd put Sheffield above Leeds on pretty much any given scale.

I understand that for some, all the art and culture we have is a bit overwhelming, maybe even scary.

The north has it's 'charm' too.

I end up all over the country from time to time, and I really don't get the difference. I like places down south, and I like places up north. Theres really not a lot of difference.

Sheffield is a great place. It seem's to have everything in my opinion.

as for the moor, they have demolished and are rebuilding an open market, will be great when it's finished.

This week it was released that Gatecrasher have submitted planning permission for a new club after the previous one burnt down, Sheffield has a good strip (west street) of bars but lacks major clubs, if you google it there should be a couple of articles but it was literally only announced tuesday, This link may help from page 3 even if its not what you had in mind, might give you an idea towards your final decision with how to go about opening a new business. Or you could use the idea as your own!

As said before the tram system is brilliant so you could base it around this, the moor is in the middle of redevelopment. The meadowhall shopping centre is excellent as is the don valley area. Also two successful football teams, with one stadium being selected for world cup matches if the bid is successful. Plenty of hotels and casino's etc so id avoid this area

Good to hear Gatecrasher are finally getting their act together! See the daft troll just embarrasses himself more every time I read his comments - with or without my input!
