Netbook is messed up..keeps shutting down, restarting, says windows explorer is not working , windows explorer is restarting ..

but

this sybol appears in the toolbar when it decides to switch itself on after about 25mins of waiting (before jamming again)

is the hard drive dead/bad?

Probably Spyware/Virus.

I don't recognise that as an official emblem for anything.

check taskmanager for services running that you dont recognize google any your unsure of, or do a msconfig and check the tabs for stuff thats starting with windows, microsoft services will say microsoft and you can hide them what evers left if you dont recognize it untick the box to stop it from starting.

scan the pc with antivirus but it appears to me. Pitchfork next to a monitor is some virus antivirus.

Gathering by your knowledge of computers, you purchased this computer/laptop pre made?

In that case the best bet is to get the Windows 7 CD that came with it and reinstall Windows. Don't bother with AntiVirus etc as you'll probably never clear it fully.

Also your hard drive is fine. It's a message most of these Viruses have to make you pay for things you don't need (scanners etc)

When the computer is loading up press the F8 key. You'll get a list of options, one of which will be SAFE MODE. If you pick that then you'll be able to get to your Task Manager without explorer crashing/restarting.

Sam that icon u have drawn just means your pc is connected to the Internet it's not a virus.

Did you build the machine yourself? If not and you dont know what male the hdd is and its a desktop pull the side off and check the make of drive then go to the manufacturers site and download there tool which you will need to burn to disk and boot from, this will tell you if your drive has problems.

That resembles Windows 7 network icon, I recall one of my pcs would crash when a certain Ethernet driver was installed, Try updating the network driver.

Also Check for virus's and spyware etc...

I recommend Spybot, Malwarebytes, Avast all available for free.

As for HD issues perhaps all the crashing may have damaged the HD or perhaps it's damaged some data and giving a false reading.

However your HD may be failing.

Haha! It actually is. It's the network connection. Sorry when the picture was in the deal bit up top it was small and I thought it was a screenshot. Not a drawing in paint.

If it's still happening in safe mode and now that icon has turned out to be the LAN connection then it probably is a hardware (Hard Disk Drive) fault afterall.

HP will sort it out, they are pretty good :)

I know your useless drawing has been identified as the network icon but get malwarebytes and microsoft security essentials and run a scan just to make sure, although with your lack of mouse and common sense im not sure this is reasonable to ask of you

All this could of been avoided if the image was actually a proper image and not some random stick drawing you should of took a screenshot as the picture you posted looks nothing like a network connection icon.
