What first bike?

I'm looking at buying a bike for general use. It will be my first bike and I'm not sure what type I should be looking for.
Mountain bike? or hybrid bike?
Looking to just be able to get from A to B lol. About a few miles each way 3 times a week, currently but more once I have a bike.
Would a mountain bike be comfortable on the road?
Don't know where to start.
Don't mind the budget (<350) if it serves the purpose for 5 years or so!
Any tips/deals/info other hukd members can share would be great!

For for a hybrid/trail bike, you'll get more distance for the amount of energy put in that a mountain bike, yet it had more flexibility than a road bike.

Do you think its viable to do ~3 mile journeys each way on mountain bikes? Or would the hybrid be a better option?

For 3 miles either bike would be fine.

if you went for a mountain bike at least you would have the option to go off road a bit if you wanted to!
