What gadgets can you not live without? Need an idea for an 18th birthday present!

Hey guys!

Basically, i'm 18 next week, and i've been asked what I want for my birthday! I want to get something other than money to make the day a little more interesting... I've been told I can have about £130 for a present.

But see, I just don't know what to get! I have an lcd tv, I have a 360 slim, I have freeview HD, a Nokia E71 which I am content with, I have a 64gb iPod Touch, so I guess that narrows any suggestions down...

I just want something gadgety, whether it's greatly useful, or just fun... I love gadgets and technology, but i'm struggling to find something!

I'd like an iPad, so I could put the cash towards that, but I was thinking about holding off until the iPad 2 is released... or I could put it towards a new laptop, or maybe towards getting myself a netbook instead of an iPad for now, but I was going to just buy both before I go to uni this year, so I can have a bang up to date laptop and netbook for the 5 years at uni when I won't be buying luxuries like them!

I could have the cash, and put it towards one of the above when I choose to buy them, but I want something on the day, so I have something to look forward to, you know, and my parents want to buy me something too.

Any recommendations/ideas?

Thanks alot!

Matt

£130 is a tight budget these days for the latest tech, honestly can't think of anything. Tried looking at gadget sites to get an idea maybe?

A watch, I couldnt live without mine.
It was an 18th birthday gift, engraved on the back, one of my most treasured posessions.

Kindle is good.

Personally I love my revo running xbmc. A bit over budget, perhaps an older one?

Handheld/ pocket projector.

kinect for your xbox ? not really gadgety as such but round the price range you want .

A watch that doubles as a video camera, that's what my son wants. I dread to think why.

Tempted by the Revo, but I stream to the xbox, or use a HDD plugged straight into the TV, which plays almost anything... I'm thinking maybe a sound bar for my little setup... But I think I may just get my buddy to pull up and relay the carpet, and put proper 5.1 in.

I'm happy to add money... Maybe £100, but at the moment I can't justfiy adding £300 to get an ipad... so I'll wait for the ipad 2 I think, then get ipad 1/ipad 2 depending on finances.

Kindle seems like a good idea... I thought about that. Thought about getting a wi-fi one anyway... Kindle over sony reader etc? I don't read many books at the moment, but I thought it may spur me back into reading, I used to read a tremendous amount... Did you read more after you got it? Do you buy all of the books?

Thanks for the watch idea... My mum suggested that. I've never really been a watch person though, but I appreciate nice watches... I will oneday.

Yeah, £130 isn't much... T3 blogs and stuff mentioned some random useess gadgets ike those RFID readers and transmitters which would be fun, but pointless! Also coffee machines and stuff.

Kindle wins so far... maybe a revo though. Be great if you could answer my kindle questions :)

Is waiting for the ipad 2 sensible? Sound wise waiting for a netbook until just before I go to uni?

Thanks ever so much for the replies guys!

I have a kindle (non 3g) and really like it. Have read 3 books since Christmas and I think I prefer it, although I still prefer having books on a shelf.

As mentioned there's more than enough books to keep you going from the usual places, although it might be worth checking there's enough you would actually read

Thanks for advice... Sounds like it will be Kindle or cash.

I would go for the kindle, but my only concern is that I will barely use it... I don't know. Maybe I should just go for it, and read some free books and get into reading lots again... all I read now is biographies so, I guess I've forgotten how much more gripping a good fiction book can be... I think for my car/photography books though, I'll still buy hardback!

Camera would be fab, but to be honest, I'm quite into photography and I am just waiting until I feel I can splurge a good amount on my first DSLR setup, so until then, I'll hold fire on camera's and put the money towards a DSLR :)

Tempted to add 120 or so to a netbook, but I think I'll wait, and see how much use I get from an ipad, once the ipad 2 has come out and pushed ebay prices down... Then reconsider the whole netbook thing, even though there are some great deals around at the moment, I think I'd only use it for surfing while I'm still at college, and I find the small screen a bit odd, not sure how well I'd adapt to it... Strange, cause the ipad screen feels huge cause you're using your fingers I guess, and can zoom in easier too. I think I'd get one for uni, cause it'd be more useful than an ipad, but for current useages, I reckon I'll hold out for an ipad, cause web, music, big email, and apps is all I'd use it for, and the odd document when in a squeeze.

Is the kindle 3g browser any good? I'd happily cope with wifi and just buy books at home, unlike with the app store on the ipod, which I wish I could use easily on the go... But maybe for an extra £40 free web would be good, at least until I get an ipad? Just can't image the web in e-ink! :S

lol not confused at all are you.. :p

I got a Netbook 2 years ago for my birthday.. At first it was a bit weird, I was using a big old pc up until then.. but now if I use my fellas laptop I find it too big and much prefer my little netbook.
The Ipad, does that come with a stand? I think the typing thing would bug me, and the fact it has to lay flat in order for me to use both hands.. You know, like not being able to adjust the screen to where I want it, like on my netbook? I just think the novelty would wear off with an Ipad, for me anyway.

The Kindle.. Ive thought about those too and a few days ago I spotted all the free books that I wouldnt mind a read of, but again, I dont know if the novelty would wear off.. Ive got 101 Classic books on the DS and the fact theres so little on the screen bugs me, youre turning pages every few seconds and that alone bugs me enough not to bother with it.. but Ive no idea how big the Kindle is tbh.

Good luck with whatever you decide! :)

have u got psp or DSi XL....or are they too kiddy?

Haha, yeah I am quite confused as to when to get a netbook/ipad... Whether to get the ipad when the ipad 2 makes the prices drop, or to skip it and get a netbook now, instead of just before I go to uni...

You can type stuff okay on the ipad, I think you get used to it... If you were typing documents at a flat surface you could use the ipad bluetooth keyboard and stand :) - I think I'll sell it before I go to uni and get a 12inch netbook though, for productivity... And keep the 15 inch laptop in my dorm room.

Also, yeah, got an original launch model psp with custom firmware. ipod touch games see more use on the go though, and the xbox at home, so yeah, it's in a drawer! :P

also, Nikki, check out the Zaggmate, and clamcase... Very very smart too. Sort of gives you the best of ipad, and best of netbook... If there is a good office-like suite in the app store, you could be quite productive, and have the sleek design, brilliant screen, and the appstore fun etc.

you can surf the web on the kindle via wifi also so 3g isn't a must

Well, went down a different route entirely! Picked what I think is a very nice Armani watch! Hopefully will now be a watch person! :p

You've made me contemplate a Revo, and a Kindle, as well as the iPad! ;)

Thanks alot all! X)
