What are you giving up for Lent?

Every year we try to give up something as a family (both for mutual support and basically because I can't keep track of what everyone has given up!). This year we are struggling to find something that we would ALL actually miss. Any suggestions? What are you giving up, if anything. It doesn't have to be something tangible, last year I tried giving up Facebook. Failed.

Lol. Probably fail there too. I want something we can sacrifice as a family. I don't think the kids are on here. Yet.

I would love to give up facebook! Its too time wasting and addictive. but I always end up back there! I have family abroad and my parents hours from me, so I use facebook to add pictures of my kids so my family can see them grow.

I would love to give up chocolate, only because I have 5lb to lose before holiday in may, I would love max 8lb off by then, Already lost 17lb but think giving up the choc treats would boost the rest.

Can I do it?? No probably not!

Defies the point really. It has to be something we would at least miss. Struggle to go without would be great, a real sacrifice would be smashing. The feeling of failure is pretty big, when you've tried and failed, but as a family when we successfully do it it's fantastic! (And cheating is especially frowned upon!)

To each his own and all that. Doesn't mean you can be without suggestions though, does it?

At the minute, I'm thinking crisps. We do get through a huge amount of crisps, but as I see them as a luxury anyway, is it really a big enough challenge? All I'd have to do is stop buying them, and then it's done. No one else goes shopping, so no one else would struggle.

Aww 6 months will go quick, will be summer then :p you can show off your new body.
I just looked up the date and it works out quite well. Lent ends 23rd April, so I am sure im giving up choc now. Takes me to nearly holiday.
Only downfall I will have it my DD's birthday in the middle of it!

give up buying items that are not needed and then at the end of the year you can all have a big treat.
probably a rubbish idea but i think its a good one lol.

The Bible? That's my permanent lent compromise, I gave it up in year 2 ;D

O.K. if your serious about doing it give up something like TV or the internet. Something that would bring your family closer. (Or tear them apart!)

Hmmm. TV. I think I'd cheat and watch Eastenders online. Plus, sometimes, it's Zingzillas or throttle some children. Usually Zingzillas wins.

That's what I meant! I only watch Eastenders, and the news - but the kids have it on pretty much all day. I'd have a revolt on my hands if I threatened to turn it off for more than an hour!

I'd love to give up the car. It would be a real sacrifice to have to walk to school in the rain... worth a ponder. Then if there's an emergency the damned thing probably wouldn't start.

Give up takeaways, save the money, buy the family something nice after lent

Husband would probably like me to give up talking!
I would like to give up spending, Greyparrot I think your idea is fab, but i would just find an excuse for that item to be 'essential' haha. Maybe I could give up spending just £3 a day less, would be £120 saved over the 40 days.

Isn't that the point! Just out of interest, are you a Christian or just doing it for **** and giggles?

I am, that was my point about it being a real sacrifice. It's a horrid walk in the rain, and something we would ALL have to do - so it's a winner so far. Probably have to go out and start the car once a week so it doesn't completely die. For your interest, I'm a practising Catholic, Lent is something we observe every year.
