which ever media you decide always make backups of the backup as one may fail losing all of it.

2 hard drives, I always have one extra internal hard drive in my PC and one external hard drive .

backup to riteck dvd's and store in a dark place that isn't cold. they will last about 10 years, so im told.
always make 2 backups.

As above, prefer DVD for "long term" backup at the moment, and cheap too... so if you want to make loads of duplicates to be on the safe side if it's really really important stuff. Depends really on how much data you have to store and if you need quick access to it etc etc.
read on a tech news site a while back that boffins are working on a new kind of "DVD" that should be able to store data for 100 years, can't remember the capacity of them, but think it was around 1TB... would be cool if they do come into use @ a reasonable write speed of course :)

and dont store them as a zip / rar file cos 1 byte glitch = problems
