What is the best format to keep video files in? Sound and visual wise? e.g. avi, wma, mpg etc

Ive been trying to convert some old videos from xvid to a new format, so the files can play on the xbox, ps3, dvd player etc. The files aren't massively great quality and only play on the computer. Hence, why i'm doing it. I've tried converting them to avi but it only seemed to work on one of the xbox. I then tried wma, the picture quality was good, but sound was not in sinc at all. MP4 seemed to be ok, but not entirely sure. So Im just curious if you guys have got any advice or recommendations

Many Thanks!

(Any recommended freeware to do the conversion would be great as well; Ive tried a couple and they seem to be ok but just wondering whats best!)

you need the original source, no point converting from a low quality format (bitrate) to a high one.

thats AFAIK.

I'm not worried about making the quality or sound better. I'm just curious whats the best type in genral to keep files in.

Are you sure >>?

Then why do it or why would you be interested if your not interested in the answer.

There is no magic but the answer is in their original format.

I don't think that is what the reply was saying.

Basically whatever produced the files did it a certain quality. That is the best quality that file will ever be. Anything you do to that file will either keep it as good or degrade it. Even programs or processes that suggest they can improve a files quality are not doing that. They at best make the file when played or seen look or sound better to you by clever digital manipulation tricks. However whatever they do, they usually lose some of the original data in the file replacing it with guesses on what should be there.

If you keep the files in the original format you will be in a position later on to use the latest available software (and these get better all the time) to make any tweaks you think improve the playback at the time.

The main issue with longevity of data storage is the media you use, and this does not relate to the file format.

TBF OP probably means what would be best format to allow 360,Ps3,dvd player to be able to read[PLAY] all without doing anything else with them.

Original format is still the best quality answer. So convert your original DVDs to MP4 (keep within a certian profile, resolution etc) check 360 specs, ps3 specs dvd player specs (as long as your DVD player can play, XVID,DIVX,MP4 etc)
