Hi guys,.

I need to buy my mum a printer/scanner/copier for xmas but want one that is cheap to run (ink cartridges)

I was considering the 'Canon PIXMA MP490' as the ink appears to be around £25 for both black and colour cartridges.

If anyone can recommend a cheaper alternative I would be appreciative.

I'd want to spend no more than £65 ideally.

Thanks

I'm a HP fan, can't recommend a specific model but I think my parents got this one from Tesco

The ink prices will vary depending on where you go for them - I've always found Costco really cheap for HP cartridges.

get an epson, you can always get cheapy mccheap cartridges for them. 10 for a tenner on shebay, or other ink sites. Might have to "clean" the heads a bit each time but you'll save a packet in the long run.

I've just come across the 'Epson Sx415' which appears to be even cheaper to run with third party replacement cartridges at a £1.56 each if bought in bulk.

Speaking from experience, its a big hassle if the epson printer doesn't entirely agree with the cheap cartridges. :)

yeah thats the kinda deal i mentioned. As poster above says some can be dodgy, cartridges that is, printers are spot on. However whatever way you look at it, you're still gonna save a packet even if you get a few dodgy ones. I've used epsons for years and can't begin to imagine how much i've saved.

After many different printers, last one epson.........finally got a lazer printer for £50. Sure Epsons are cheap for ink but every couple of weeks I was changing cartridges. Kids only used colour a few times so when you diod need the colour, it had dried. Although you can replace each cartridge separately, they dry and don't work if not used very often. The Epson's were just not reliable enough for me.

My black and white lazer is excellent and no hassle. Colour is not an issue for me. There are plenty of places I can take my pen drive if I need to print the odd colour piece.
