What is the most expensive item you've bought on ebay?!

Just wondering what the most expensive item people have bought off ebay is!

I don't mean to pry, so posting the price you paid is optional.

I'm tempted to maybe buy a mobile or 2 off ebay, but am always wary of people saying they have the goods when they actually don't! That happened to a friend of mine's girlfriend! She was not happy to say the least!

If you can help it at all, avoid eBay for mobile phones.

There ARE genuine deals out there, but you have to be really savvy to get them. Too many people are out to rob you.

Even when you think you've got a good deal, you might get a refurb, or a well kept second hand set.

Check this thread by dinosteveus for some essential eBay tips.

More often than not, you can get a deal just as good or even better by using cashback deals and ducky's famous mobile threads!

If you do resort to eBay, good luck!

I've bid about a grand on a few Breitling watches, but never won one.

Oh, I just remembered, I bought a mint Omega Seamaster Chronograph for £780, valued at £1,800.

It's pretty easy. You just press some buttons and run your finger along the pad. It's a bit like a harp really, lol. I don't actually ever play it though.

I was only going to buy a cheapy Motorola U6 Orange PEBL. There is one on there for just over £100 all in. Not that much money IF I was going to get stung, but I know it's available for only a bit more than that elsewhere, through decent companies, so it's not worth the risk for 1 more positive feedback!

I'd never buy a contract phone on ebay, mainly because I have enough!

Ducky's threads are fantastic as you say and so is Dinosteveus' ebay thread!

Quite a varied reply already!

Loving that QChord Ducky!

I was tempted to put a bid in on a car I've wanted for ages, just to say I was in with a shout of buying it and was "unlucky", but knowing my luck, I'd win the auction and have to pay £15K easily on something I'd love, but can no way afford! :(

Bought a snooker table for £350 - guys were looking £500 to deliver it to NI. Got it home for £50 because a lorry driver mate was passing Carlisle. Took four of us to lift it being slate bed. Great buy,

Sounds like you got a great deal!

I bought my current car on eBay for £3400.

I'm winning !!!

I think the most expensive item I've bought on ebay was a Zuiko Digital 50-200mm lens for 415 pounds - I hesitated because it had all the classic signs of a scam, stock photos, seller hadn't sold items like that before and too good to be true. Went for it anyway (seller had a decent amount of feedback) and received the lens about 27 hours after I'd won the auction in perfect condition as described. I was well pleased as the lens new costs around 700-800 pounds. I'm generally a lot more cautious though, I've bought one mobile off ebay (an SE W900i) and although it worked out ok I did think I'd made a mistake doing so.

Bobbajob - I'm guessing you handed the cash over in person though so there wasn't as much risk.

A £750 computer about four years ago.
I make a very good living from ebay, so I know what scams to look out for.

A living, or an earner? If you don't mind me asking?

I don't mind you asking CJ
To you, it may be an 'earner' but to me it's a 'living'
I have two very active selling ID's.

So it's your only source of income?

Do you sell anything in particular, or just a general trader?

6k on a car. But car's are a bit different as your not trusting the seller to post your goods and dealing with paypal.
#21
I'm just a 'general trader' on my Dino ID.
Sorry, but the other ID I need to keep away from the boards. I can't afford Auction Wreckers etc. I'm pretty blunt and some people may take my comments the wrong way and trash my auctions.

Most expensive thing bought on ebay was a set of Cambridge soundworks THX speakers for the pc.Paid around £105 and the cheapest thy were advertised for through other channels was about £180,so we considered them a bargain.

Don't do ebay much but my mum sells all sorts through ebay, bit of a hobby.
I am not allowed to throw anything away now, have to give it to her to sell, but it keeps her out of trouble!

She once sold the most naff and hideous piece of crap, some sort of ornament job,her friend gave it her and said no-one would buy it,laid down the challenge on ebay starting at 99p and someone paid about a fiver for it!

Bonkers i tell ye:giggle:

muckypup,
That item may have finished a collection for somebody and made that collection worth thousands. You just never know.

I bought a mobile from ebay, was £112 I think....I am weary about going higher than that though, I tend to prefer to buy more expensive things from shops (I find eBay isn't all the cheap these days any way) and save eBay for the bargain items for a few quid!
#27
Most expensive item was .... a Blue Peter Badge! (about £40)

To explain, this was before the great 'BPB-Gate' and I only got it because it was useful to have for a particular plot (I'm a professional Murder Weekender at the weekends!). So I bought it at the beginning of the plot with the intention of selling it on at the end of the plot (i.e. not to use directly to scam tourist places out of their entrance fees - honest!!) but by the time the plot ended (three months later) the BPB ban had come in! Grr!!

Hey-ho!

We needed a second car (just a little runaround) to get my DH to and from work - we got an N reg Nissan Micra for £375 which is the most I've ever spent on Ebay.

twinsplus,
I have updated the ebay help post, have you looked at it??

Bought a Seiko Sportura watch for £190, retails for £360. From a reputable UK seller. Looks great and not a fake. However this was in my earlier Ebay days and maybe would be reluctant now to fork out that much on Ebay.

I bought this Akai S3000XL sampler with a ZIP 250 drive quite some time ago, and had a great laugh watching the rival bidder wake up as I bid on it last minute - and won. 250 quid incidentally, now only worth 150 but I'd never get rid.

In fact it was done by money transfer after careful consideration, and feedback summarising. Not a single problem and the seller was A1.

I bought a car on ebay for £4k and got it delivered for £40, turned out to be a bargain, nobody else had bid on it so I got it for about £1k less than I expected to pay. I also sold a car on Ebay for £12.5k and it was free to list it and the buyer paid cash so no fees involved!
#36
I bought my previous car from Ebay £5900.

I felt physically sick when I won the auction having spent so much without seeing the car, but it turned out to be perfect. I've also sold a couple of cars for about £4000.

I don't really have a problem with spending alot of money on ebay provided the seller has good feedback but I'd be especially careful with phones. So many people use and abuse ebay now that there don't seem to be many bargains about.

Good luck though
#37
I bought a car for £3600, but the seller was good enough to let us go to look at it and even took my husband for a test drive before I bid.
#38
The most i ever spent was £150 and everything went through fine.... the next highest amount however was £85 and i got ripped off.

Luckily enough it was through paypal and my credit card so was able to claim the money back
#39
Some beautiful sandstone flooring, just over £1,000 pounds.

Bought a laptop for £700 once, a (new) Dell X1. Really pleased with it, cos it's the sized of a thin pad of paper, weighs 1.1 kg, and even 18 months later prices haven't changed a great deal (ultra light lappies have ripoff prices cos they're aimed at money-no-limit executives).

As long as you pay by credit card, you'll be fine as you can just chargeback if there's a problem. If they don't take credit card, I wouldn't buy anything much over £100, which is about ebay's refund policy limit.
