Its a seperate OS people use it to play things like emulators off it however Sony intentionally made the CPU work slower when another operating system is installed.

Basically you can change between PS3 OS and Linux just by pressing a single button.

thats why i was asking.

it basically turns your pc in to a pointless computer.

not worth doing unless you know what you are doing.

Depends on what you want to use, rememebr though to backup saves and videos as to install it it formats the hard drive first.

If you want to play emulators and the such instead of on the PC then use it, its basically a mini pc operating system so you can browse internet, download stuf, go on youtube whatever but dont expect pc speed quality.

Also for a newbie its hard to get stuff to work as its not like a PC downloading a file and installing it, you have to download a folder and use it in a certain way.

Whilst you're here, you said on another thread that most PS3 games give you the option to install to hard drive nowadays, care to explain?

It was jjust something I have heard and I only own about 5 PS3 games and 4 of them let me install to the HD.

I just heard it was for the bigger games as they take ages to load normally.

Not quite. It doesn't make the CPU work slower. It only allows access to 6 of the 7 Synergistic Processing Elements (basically the processors) and restricts access to the RSX 'Reality Synthesizer' (the GPU).

I also heard it restricts access to the blu ray drive too, I only installed it myself last year to use on a CRT to play ps1 games off(not isos) but it altered the aspect ration so made it useless and gave me the macrovision green screen.

So do ya know if emulation on its any good, never tried on mine.

I haven't actually done it on my PS3, I just know of the limitations. Was it the emulator or Linux that was altering the aspect ration?

Linux itself, it had black borders at the top and bottom, there may of been a way to change it but I dont know.

But that doesnt explain the macrovision/green screen problem.
