What Pontins Cigarette House was you in ? Reminds me of console wars

When I went to Pontins in the 70s as a child(And Butlins) I was allocated a dining spot and house, you could either be in Embassy Regal house or Benson And Hedges house, this is no joke. You sat in the area designated with the ciggy signs at each end of the mass dining hall.

As kids we would hang around the arcade and question other kids as to their cigarette house preference, quotes of "you Benson and Hedges b,stards" would go around and a few fights and attacks would take place all in the name of our respective cigarette house.

This hate was propagated by blue coats. At the swimming pool events we would be asked our cigarrette house by the blue coats, only to be booed or clapped by Benson and Hedges people. I cleary remember kids chanting down the mic "Embassy Embassy Embassy" and goading on other people from opposite houses.

Kinda mad when I think about this.

I can't believe that anything related to children was named after cigarette companies...

I spose during the 70's it was so much more widely acceptable for people to smoke around children and that it was all part of the marketing as it was then.

I also leaned to swim on that holiday, brother shoved me in the deep end (6ft 6") but only being four foot nowt at the time I learned to swim.!

You would not credit it now but the staff used to come around the club house giving cigs out to the customers.

Awful lol!

I remember my elder sis who smoked ( I never did, miss goody two shoes lol ) having to pretend she was 13 to buy cigs in a shop. I'm sure you'd have to be older than that to buy em now!

Almost everybody smoked back then. Yeah, I remember them giving out free ciggys in dinning hall, or giving out extra cigs and goodies for exchanging in competitors ciggys.

The loyalty to houses though was incredible. I remember the middle of the dining hall being empty, like a no mans land as each house sat at opposite ends of the dining hall.

I remember being in some sort of childrens club and being asked what house I was in, when I said "Embassy" down the mic all the other kids cheered and clapped.

Never went to Rio as a kid, no.
In order to have told "another" fib, would meant I had told a fib previously btw. :)

I remember going to Pontins at Prestatyn in the 70s. The chalets were on two levels, the ground floor being Embassy and the top floor being Castella.
Happy days.
