Hi, I recently bought a refurbished Advent 5301 from pcworld and I'm looking to upgrade from 2GB to 4GB RAM but I'm unsure which RAM is compatable with my laptop, I've tried searchin around the net and the crucial website but I'm still clueless, any help would be much appreciated, also heres the spec from the pcworld website, dunno if it helps at all...

Thanks in advance.

try the best friend of all the RAM

and select the scan my computer. It will ask you to install some active-x files and than it will all be shorted.
and also check the max RAM allowed and see if it indeed supports 4GB RAM...
Tried the system scan on crucial, its says "Our System Scanner couldn't make a complete match, but we can still help you find the right memory upgrade." so I then put in manufacturer : advent Product line : notebook but then asks for model number which is "5301" which isnt there?
although it did tell me

Maximum Memory Capacity: 12582912 MB
Currently Installed Memory: 2048 MB
Available Memory Slots: 1
Number of Banks: 2
Dual Channel Support: N.A.
CPU Manufacturer: GenuineIntel
CPU Family: Intel(R) Pentium(R) Dual CPU T2370 @ 1.73GHz Model 15, Stepping 13
CPU Speed: 1733 MHz

which was helpfull, im guessin all i'll need is a 2GB to put in my empty bank, although I am still stumped about which one.
I have to say you will probably notice almost no difference between 2Gb and 4Gb.

And if you are running 32 bit Vista then going over 3Gb is probably not even worth it.
If it just a one memory slot as Advent claims, it will not be worth your while.

2GB DDR2 PC2-5300 (1 Memory Slot. Max 2GB)

Have a look here, http://www.uktsupport.co.uk/advent/laptop/5301.htm
I am not sure if the scan report is right as max memory is wrong and if that is the case I am not usre whether you have 1 memory installed or 2 memory installed.

Since you are looking for a memory my feeling says that you know how to install the new memory and if that is the case than I can give you a piece of advie. Its simple to follow if you do it correctly.

* Turn off your laptop
*Remove battery
*Open the Screw to memory bank
* Check how many memory cards are installed and check for empty slot.
* If you can read the white label on memory card than fine otherwise remove the memory from the bank and write down the details. Install it back and you can find it anywhere incl crucial.

Looks lengthy but its simple to do..
Thanks folks, much appreciated
Book mark - thx :)
Try CPU-Z. It'll give you how many slots you've got as well as the type of memory:
