What's my cheapest Freesat option?

Hi all,

I'm ready to jog Sky on at the beginning of May when my 12 months are up, as I'm paying just shy of £30 a month for three mixes plus the HD pack. It's pointless really as I just don't watch it often enough to justify shelling out £360 a year for it- plus the vast bulk of what I watch is stuff that's available on Freeview channels anyway! I watch the occasional bit of the National Geo and Discovery channels, but not enough to warrant paying for them.

I've just discovered you can plug your Sky cables straight into a Freesat box and be good to go, so I've decided to switch to that. The only thing that put me off in the past was having to pay for installation and so on, but now I know that I can just buy a box and be good to go, I'm wondering what my cheapest option is? I'm very much adept at hunting down this information if I need to, but I'm feeling lazy today and hoping someone who knows the going prices can tell me what's the cheapest price I can get a Freesat box for that will receive FTA HD channels and that I can pause/record with. Any help or info about deals would be greatly appreciated!

I presume I can't use all the Sky + features though if I was to do that, which is one thing I would quite sorely miss. Thanks for the suggestion though!

In the world of digital set-top-boxes the "+" suffix denotes the ability to record TV (It used to be "HDR" but that gets confused with Hi-Def).

Your two choices are FreeSat+ or FreeSat HD+ (HD here means Hi-Def). For some reason FreeSat+ is currently around £230 but FreeSat HD+ is only £130, so the later is the option to go for.

Installation is just a matter of moving over both F-connectors and the SCART cable from the Sky+ box to the FreeSat HD+ box.

Or the HDMI in my case... Seems pointless using SCART on an HD box after all!!! :p

I've just discovered there's no Channel 4 HD on Freesat though, which is a massive pain in the balls. I'm going to have to weigh up what's the better option. I wonder if Sky offer an option to use the Sky+ features with the FTA card.... I sincerely doubt it though!!!

You can use all the sky box functions, surely?

You'd think so, wouldn't you! They're subscription based features, so say you don't pay your bill and are disconnected, you can't use pause/rewind/fastforward/record. Whether that applies with the Freesat card, I'll have to enquire.

Just spoke to them and you have to pay £10 a month to be able to use said functionality when using a Freesat card...

Balls. Need to weigh the cost of a freeview box. Or selling your SKY box.

HD recording box is £230 upwards.

Yeah, it's kinda irritating really as a Freesat box is essentially the same gear as a Sky HD box- yet you're lucky to get much more than £50-60 for the Sky box... To be honest, the functionality is built into the hardware so it's utter ******** that you have to pay to use it. I was hoping someone was going to come along and tell me that there are some Freesat HD recorders for around the £100 mark that I'd somehow missed, but it indeed seems like I'm in a bit of a poop position really!

My personal opinnion is pay sky for the cheapest entertainment pack for 6 months by then boxes will come down.

Or you pay the minumn £10 for 6 months and wait on prices.

They did say about paying £18 a month for one mix, but I'd rather just pay the £10 out of those two options. I suppose it's probably worth holding out a bit longer to let the FTA HD market develop and see what's what later on in the year.
