I've got several really big trees in the back garden. They're blocking nearly all of the light to the top half of the garden, so I want to do something about it. I own an axe and I'm pretty adept at hitting things with it, so is the process of cutting some branches away as simple as climbing the tree, sitting on a nearby branch, and hitting the offending branch until it breaks off, or is there anything more complex to the job than that?

Cheers

But they're really expensive. One guy came round a few weeks ago, he reckoned it'd be around £100 to cut one of my trees back, and that was with the "already here in the area today" discount.

I'd rather use a chain saw than an axe... although i think we have both in the garage, lol

Awesome - I went out and started attacking it with my hickory axe, and when I'd nearly finished my first branch, my neighbour came out and offered me a loan of his bushman's saw. I'd never heard of one of these things before, and I was kinda skeptical since my experience with my dad's timber saw has been embarassingly lame. But he popped round all the same, came into the back garden and gave it to me, and I've just had a goddamn great time with it. There's something magic about climbing a tree ant taking thirt years worth of branch growth off in a matter of minutes. I've written on these forums before about how great my neighbour is, but I have to do it again here. He's fantastic. Great, great man.

Gonna go back outside and hack more branches off now, I love this :viking:

the first thing you need to do is found out if the tree's have a preservation order on them before you go hacking anything about if they do & you chop them about you could find yourself with a large bill from the local authority !
