Depends on their ages.

Here may be a start

2 years and 4 months up to school age (4)

There should always be an appropriate number of adults to children. The staffing ratio being:- 1 adult to every 4 children aged 2 year and 1 to 8 for 3 * 5 years. However, if the building presents particular problems, extra staff may be necessary. A higher ratio of adults to children may also be necessary when children with disabilities attend a group.

Some schools may choose to mix their reception classes with groups of younger children, in which case they should use their discretion in establishing ratios for these mixed groups based on the EYFS welfare requirements (that is, 1:30 for the reception group and 1:13, 1:8 and so on for the younger children). This applies whether the pre-school element is provided directly by the school or in partnership through a PVI provider

Ratios vary according to the setting, i.e. a higher child to adult ratio is permitted in school to that in the private sector.(Foundation Stage 1 and 2)
The level of qualification varies too in the setting. In FS2 the ratio is 1:30 but the adult must be a qualified teacher.

If your child is two years of age, his/her keyworker should have responsibility for four children ( including your child )

Its an independant playschool normally run by 3 qualified staff and 2 helpers. 2 of the qualified staff were not in this afternoon and i was wondering if they are allowed to do that??

The playschool takes a maximum of 26 children

I think that most childcarers now have to have or be working towards a level3 in childcare. Aren't the helpers, trained in some way?

I'd ask if I were you. I'm sure when the qualified staff have to be away from the children they should ensure that there are appropriate child numbers : staff in place.

You could look up their Ofsted report and see what Ofsted say bout them x

My son goes and i'm happy with them but after today i was wondering if it was ok for them to do that! He is leaving to go to school in Sept but other parents might not be so relaxed about it!

Why not just ask the manager/head what their policy is and take it from there.

It will be written down somewhere (you probably have a copy yourself from when they started).

one option is to run it by the care commission they will be registered and inspected by them. They can also set your mind at ease or check iout if the appropriate staff ,child ratio has been adhered to. They will respect your confidentiality:)

If your lil one is happy there thats the most important thing. Kids soon say if they're scared of somewhere even if they can't say why what or how xx
