what's up with my outlook express?

I use Outlook Express for my emails. When I go into the programme it automatically sends and receives emails. I've never had a problem with it until today.
When I came home this evening I went to check my emails and it said receiving 1 of 12. Then it said 2 of 12 and it stayed on 2 of 12 for about 10 minutes until I realised that it wasn't working properly. So I closed it and reopened it and it was still on 2 of 12. Next I restarted the computer and it said receiving 1 of 12 then almost instantly went to 2 of 12, but the 1 of 12 was the same one I had already received.
I have looked at the emails in a different programme and they are just ordinary letters, no pictures or videos that might take a while to receive.
I tried it again about an hour ago and it received the same 1 of 12 again but won't get to 2. I have left it receiving email 2 for over an hour now and it now it's saying receiving 2 of 13. What shall I do? :santa:

This is the sort of stuff I get at work :-D

But unfortunately, I don't deal with it. I pass it to whoever deals with these probs. I triage calls to the correct dept. Just so ya know!

One solution could be to setup your account on it again? Perhaps you could upgrade to Outlook or even use Mozilla Thunderbird perhaps? Im no use really, but i try! :p Hope you get it sorted

If I set it up again will I lose my address book?

You might need to do the following:

1] Open Outlook Express >> Go to "Tools"

2] From the drop down list, select "Options"

3] From there you should see some checkboxes. Deselect "Send and receive messages at start up"

Hope that helps.

I tried that Rayman, but then I still need to receive the backlog before I can continue to use Outlook express.

Can you access your e-mail using a webmail login? You could then delete any you don't want before downloading the rest.

You could try a Repair & Recovery approach? :? http://www.windowsmarketplace.com/Results.aspx?collID=91

I haven't a clue what its about, but came across it while searching

EDIT: ignore this, it costs money!!!

Now I can't get into Outlook Express at all. When I click on email a little egg-timer icon appears for a few seconds (normal) then usually the Outlook Express page appears but this time it didn't. The egg-timer just stays for a few seconds then disappears. I have tried it a few times.
I'm doing a virus scan, but it isn't showing anything so far.

Maybe you need to reinstall it: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/263837

Thanks Rayman. I'll take a look at that this evening when I have more time to spare. I'll let you know how I get on.

Your address book will be saved in a .PAB (personal address book) file.

Do a Windows search for *.pab and make a copy of the files just in case. I'm 99.999999% sure that you will not lose the file when reinstalling but better safe than sorry!

The article Ray found has a step by step guide to reinstalling Outlook: -

1.Remove Outlook Express 6.0 from Windows XP Home Edition or Windows XP Professional.

a. Click Start, click Run, type appwiz.cpl, and then click OK.
b. In Add or Remove Programs, click Add/Remove Windows Components.
c. In the Components list, click to clear the Outlook Express check box, and then click Next. Outlook Express will be removed from the computer.

2.Reinstall Outlook Express 6.0 on a computer that is running Windows XP Home Edition or Windows XP Professional.

a. Click Start, click Run, type appwiz.cpl, and then click OK.
b. In Add or Remove Programs, click Add/Remove Windows Components.
c. In the Components list, click to select the Outlook Express check box, and then click Next.
d. After Outlook Express is installed, click Finish.

Fingers crossed that should do the trick but let us know how you get on.

Before you uninstall OE as above search for inbox.dbx and right click on the file it finds and 'open containing folder'. Here you should have sent and received files which you may also want to make copies of or go up a level and copy the whole OE folder and save it to desktop and after youve reinstalled OE put the folder back where it was by doing the same search as before. That way you wont lose any of your old e-mails.
